Has the NRA lost it entirely?

Has the NRA lost it entirely? | American Progressive Causes | Scoop.it
While Obama signs 23 executive orders on gun control, the organization takes a bizarre shot at his family
Rhett Rebold's insight:

The NRA's response on this one pushed past the pale. One wonders if it boils down to guns and ammo sales, given the board members from Colt, etc. As a responsible gun owner myself, none of the President's moderate and common sense measures were startling or hurt my head and they may in fact lower the body count just a little.

As Study Finds 4,000 Lynchings in Jim Crow South, Will U.S. Address Legacy of Racial Terrorism?

As Study Finds 4,000 Lynchings in Jim Crow South, Will U.S. Address Legacy of Racial Terrorism? | American Progressive Causes | Scoop.it
A new report has uncovered shocking details about the history of lynchings in the United States and their legacy today. After five years of exhaustive research and interviews with local historians and descendants of lynching victims, the Equal Justice Initiative found white Southerners lynched nearly 4,000 black men, women and children between 1877 and 1950 — a total far higher than previously known. The report details a 1916 attack in which a mob lynched Jeff Brown for accidentally bumping into a white girl as he ran to catch a train. In an example from 1940, a crowd lynched Jesse Thornton for not addressing a white police officer as "mister." In many cases, the lynchings were attended by the entire white community in an area. We speak with attorney and Equal Justice Initiative founder and director Bryan Stevenson, whose group’s report is "Lynching in America: Confronting the Legacy of Racial Terror." The EJI is calling for the placement of historical markers at sites where lynchings occurred.
Rhett Rebold's insight:

Some largely "forgotten" American history to which President Obama dared to make reference at the National Prayer Breakfast. By comparison, while Germany has been forced to confront the horrors of its Nazi past; the US has barely begun its process of discussion and reconciliation for its 7 decades of racial terror. The Equal Justice Initiative's report goes a long way to at least defining the problem.  http://www.eji.org/files/EJI%20Lynching%20in%20America%20SUMMARY.pdf

Rhett Rebold's insight:

Speaking of threats to peace, I believe Boehner's invitation of Israel's most fundamentalist Prime Minister to address Congress is designed to help him scuttle the ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran and ultimately to release the dogs of war. Will they really risk a war with potentially thousands of casualties in order to deny a foreign policy victory for the President and the Country?
I've often heard the phrase, sometimes set to a 50's tune, "bomb Iran!" Ok, what comes after the bombing when we have created 1 or 2 generations of Jihadists? Do we want to "own" the place for 10 -15 years and pour our cash and blood into the country?
Iran is changing, the vast majority of Iranian's don't really hate the US and in fact many want to come here and work. There is a generation of well educated and less extreme, more secular youth which is growing in power. Let's hold our fire and give them a chance.

This is an excellent take on corporate crime and the problem with concentrated private ownership and corporate ownership overpowering the democratic government of the people.

Excerpt:

Mussolini did not like to be called a fascist, insisting his government should be thought of as one of corporate capitalism.  In that time, President Franklin Roosevelt had it that “The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism — ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power.”
