A Compromise on Defining and Diagnosing Mental Disorders

A Compromise on Defining and Diagnosing Mental Disorders | American Mental Health Care and Treatment | Scoop.it
The American Psychiatric Association’s board has approved the fifth edition of the association’s diagnostic manual, ending more than five years of controversy.
Alexandra Morehead's insight:

Days before the Newtown shooting, the APA approved a new manual designed to shift the paradigm in classifying mental disorders. The committee tightened the definitions for many disorders, including autism, depression, and pediatric bipolar disorder. The controvertial new manual will not be released until this upcoming spring, though it is still receiving attention from psychiatrists. Not only does the fifth edition make previously symptomatic traits into their own disorders, but it also redefines the classifications for diagnosing these disorders as well.

Mass Murder and Mental Illness: The Interplay of Stigma, Culture and Disease

Mass Murder and Mental Illness: The Interplay of Stigma, Culture and Disease | American Mental Health Care and Treatment | Scoop.it
What are the root causes of seemingly random violence? Does mental illness provoke it or predispose people to harm others?
Alexandra Morehead's insight:

While the majority of homicides are committed by people who do not have a mental health disorder, the majority of *mass* killings are committed by people suffering from mental disorders (particularly schizophrenia). In general, the mentally ill are no threat to anyone "other than themselves". However, cultural insensitivity, the stigma surrounding mental health, and lack of treatment are triggering factors for killings perpetuated by those suffering from a mental health disorder.

Mental Health Services Erode As States Slash Budgets

Mental Health Services Erode As States Slash Budgets | American Mental Health Care and Treatment | Scoop.it
(Repeats story moved Dec 29 without changes to headline or text) * State mental health budgets slashed since 2009 * 11 mln mentally ill report 'unmet need' for care * 'Cycling through the system' ...
Alexandra Morehead's insight:

Due to the lack of a system in treating the mentally ill, most patients are revolved through the criminal justice system as opposed to the healthcare system. The lack of in-patient care makes doctors apprehensive when involuntarily committing someone, which may only exacerbate his/her condition. Initially, de-institutionalization during the 1960-70's was targeted at making patient care more humane in mental health hospitals. Unfortunately, most mental health hopsitals have been closing, allowing for more people to be denied care in the present.

America's Mental Health Crisis

On Feb. 9, 1844, the governor of Missouri ate breakfast, went to his office and locked the door. Then he shot himself with a rifle.
Alexandra Morehead's insight:

In Missouri, public and private hospitals have been forced to cut back on mental health services. Many patients are required to pay out of their pockets for disproportionately expensive treatment.

Mental health care in U.S. questioned amid another tragedy

Mental health care in U.S. questioned amid another tragedy | American Mental Health Care and Treatment | Scoop.it
Speculation on shooter Adam Lanza's mental health has lead to calls for improving mental health services in United States
Alexandra Morehead's insight:

The stigma surrounding mental health plays a role in perpetuating socially destructive behavior. Combined with the American culture's desensitivity to violence, society has not tackled mental illness effectively; there is likely to be a correlation between unavailability of mental health care, the lack of societal understanding of mental health disorders, and our violent culture.

Radical Mental Health in an Era of Mass Shootings

Radical Mental Health in an Era of Mass Shootings | American Mental Health Care and Treatment | Scoop.it
Alexandra Morehead's insight:

Gun advocates ignore the proportional expenditures when discussing mental health. The military budget accounts for over $600 billion dollars, with arms prodution accounting for one of the highest expenditures within that budget alone. Health care, which is estimated to account for 22% of the US budget, only delegates about 5.5% of its funds to mental health care treatment. The government budget is not enough when mental health care requires some of the most expensive forms of treatment, and cost is still being listed as the main factor in inability to access care.

A lifeline for parents concerned about a child's mental health

A lifeline for parents concerned about a child's mental health | American Mental Health Care and Treatment | Scoop.it
Lynn Goodloe saw her son's grades begin to fall as he developed a knack for getting into mischief at a private Westside high school. Was it a phase, drugs or something more troubling?
Alexandra Morehead's insight:

The criminalization of mental illness has made its disgnosis more difficult. Particularly during adolescence, it is difficult to distinguish between unsocial behavior and more common personality traits (such as shyness). In summation, the takeaway from recent mass killings is that it is easier to obtain assault weaponry than it is to receive treatment for mental health disorders.

How to ensure children's mental health
Bangor Daily News
As a pediatric surgeon, I have spent my career giving children a chance to become healthy adults.
Alexandra Morehead's insight:

Our limited understanding/resources available leave many families affected by mental illness in the dark. Newman, a pediatric surgeon, suggests: accepting that mental health is a children's health issue, start screening earlier, treating children (not the diagnosis), and addressing genetics
