MITT ROMNEY IS A LIAR. PURE AND SIMPLE.

Rachel Maddow, March 2012: "There is something different about Mitt Romney as a presidential candidate ... Mr Romney is OK with lying as he runs for president even when he gets caught, and it is amazing; I think it's the most notable thing about his candidacy. It is an important thing about his candidacy that we have to grapple with as a country ..."

Gary Shteyngart on Obama and the Tea Party "insurgency": 'Bipartisanship is not going to work'

Gary Shteyngart on Obama and the Tea Party "insurgency": 'Bipartisanship is not going to work' | DispatchesUSA | Scoop.it
Obama has managed a terrible situation as skilfully as possible, the novelist tells Killian Fox, in his verdict on the presidency...

40, is a Jewish American writer who was born in St Petersburg. His third novel, Super Sad True Love Story, was published last year.

On the night Obama was elected we were at a party in Williamsburg, one of the hipster neighbourhoods of New York. This apartment overlooked a highway bringing trucks into the city and all these trucks were also honking in celebration of Obama's victory. The licence plates were Iowa and Idaho and these were big tough guys, and that surprised me more than anything else that night.

It felt glorious because at the heart of America's dysfunction has always been the deep state of slavery and its aftermath. It never fully went away, and Obama did so much to change that for us. Even a decade ago we couldn't have imagined an African-American in the White House. It made us, after eight years of Bush, happy and hopeful again.

The Final Word on Mitt Romney's Tax Plan

Mitt Romney's campaign says I'm full of it. I said Romney's tax plan is mathematically impossible: he can't simultaneously keep his pledges to cut tax rates 20 percent and repeal the estate tax and alternative minimum tax; broaden the tax base enough to avoid growing the deficit; and not raise taxes on the middle class. They say they have six independent studies -- six! -- that "have confirmed the soundness of the Governor’s tax plan," and so I should stop whining. Let's take a tour of those studies and see how they measure up.

The Romney campaign sent over a list of the studies, but they are perhaps more accurately described as "analyses," since four of them are blog posts or op-eds. I'm not hating -- I blog for a living -- but I don't generally describe my posts as "studies." ...

Teenagers Have Sex: Deal With It

Teenagers Have Sex: Deal With It | DispatchesUSA | Scoop.it
This week, a two-year-old program allowing New York City schools to distribute emergency contraception (EC) in high schools finally made news, and not in a good way. Though schools allow parents to "opt out" of the program, some parents say they should have been asked to "opt in."

This would make it even harder for kids to access EC (sometimes known as the "morning-after" pill). This is a serious mistake. I don't think parents should be asked at all. They should be informed when their child enters high school that EC is available, and again if or when their daughter needs it. The health professional should also have the option of not informing parents at all, if the child expresses compelling reasons not to do so.

Joe Biden didn't just win the debate. Joe Biden invented a new way to debate liars. | DispatchesUSA | Scoop.it

Dude totally got Bidened…

The epic performance last night by Vice President Joe Biden is destined to go down in history as one of the finest debate showings ever. Three things conspired against Congressman Paul Ryan: the truth, a debate opponent well prepared with facts and a ‘tude, and a debate moderator that was skilled and educated enough not to put up with any bullshit. This perfect storm left Ryan flopping on the beach like a fish, mouth gawping for air, completely knocked out of his zone.

It’s not easy to debate someone who tells lie after lie after lie. You risk spending your entire time refuting the lies without ever getting your own message out. Last night, Joe Biden taught us how to do it. He started out grinning whenever Ryan lied. By the end, he was openly laughing and, in what was almost like a live-tweeting of his own debate, responded in the background to each lie that rolled out of Ryan’s mouth with a refutation so that, when it was his own turn, he could actually deliver his message. ...

Obama says Romney was 'severely kidding'

Obama says Romney was 'severely kidding' | DispatchesUSA | Scoop.it

At his last scheduled public appearance before his rematch with Romney, Obama delivered an impassioned, wide-ranging speech to the University of Miami, drawing not just the contrast with his GOP opponent, but touching on an array of issues typically absent from his stump speech.

The event marked a stark contrast with his weekend fundraising trip to California – notable largely for the mea culpa from last week’s first debate – and his stumbling speech Monday in Ohio.

Speaking to a packed crowd at the school’s 9,000-seat basketball arena, Obama sought to stop Romney’s recent progression to centrist politics, reminding the crowd of what the former Massachusetts governor said during the GOP primaries.

“He’s trying to go through an extreme makeover,” Obama said. “After running for a year in which he called himself ‘severely conservative,’ Mitt Romney’s trying to convince you that he was severely kidding...”

Rick Santorum at "Reject R-74" Fundraiser, Washington State. FULL VIDEO

Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum warned on Tuesday that equal rights for LGBT Americans would destroy the church and the family and eventually “disintegrate” the institution of marriage itself.

Throughout his speech in Spokane on behalf of the the Family Policy Institute of Washington, the former candidate talked about the importance of “equal rights” and the “freedom to pursue happiness,” but said those concepts should not extend to the gay and lesbian Americans who wanted to get married.

“This issue will destroy and undermine the church in America, more than any other issue,” he continued. “You will see it even more demonstrably when it comes to the issue of same sex marriage and what churches will be able to say and not say and do and not do. You will see it taught in your schools. You will see society fundamentally change. And anyone who doesn’t agree with it will be cast — as you know, I hear it, I’m sure you do — as bigots, people who you just don’t invite into polite conversation ...”

How the White, Conservative South Took Over the GOP -- And May Take Over America | DispatchesUSA | Scoop.it

Not Just a Union Buster: Why Some of the Nation’s Most Vociferously Anti-Gay Religious Activists Are Backing California's Prop 32

Not Just a Union Buster: Why Some of the Nation’s Most Vociferously Anti-Gay Religious Activists Are Backing California's Prop 32 | DispatchesUSA | Scoop.it

Brothers David and Charles Koch, and other libertarian billionaire backers of Proposition 32, including Charles Munger Jr., like to wrap themselves in the toga of individual freedom. However, despite their supposed ideological fervor for personal liberties, they have allied themselves with some of the nation’s most vociferously anti-gay religious activists – all for a campaign to outlaw the use of automatic payroll deductions from union members and corporations for political purposes. Although it is not widely seen as a “gay issue,” Prop. 32’s passage could have far-reaching consequences for California’s gays and lesbians.

“If we lose organized labor as a funded political ally in California, the LGBT movement is in big trouble,” says Courage Campaign founder and LGBT activist Rick Jacobs. “Would you rather have Howard Ahmanson thinking about your rights in the workplace, or organized labor? That’s what this is about. Mark my words, people like the Kochs and Ahmanson are not thinking about how LGBT people are welcome in the workplace and not discriminated against.” ...

Obama v Romney: which candidate would be better for start-ups? Techies vote Obama

Obama v Romney: which candidate would be better for start-ups? Techies vote Obama | DispatchesUSA | Scoop.it
At the request of New York's tech community, both presidential candidates explained how their policies would help start-ups...

Some critics said Romney's response seemed generic and not necessarily targeted at tech start-ups, but businesses in general. The former Massachusetts governor notably avoided net neutrality, an issue of fundamental importance to many techies. Romney previously stated that he was not in favor of net neutrality or internet regulation that curtails network owners from interfering with users' internet content and services.

"Romney seems to be against all regulation except of the sort that he likes," said David Weinberger, the co-director of Harvard's Library Innovation Laboratory. "The internet is the fuel of innovation and start-ups do far better when there's broad access to the internet."

Obama, on the other hand, seemed to better understand his audience. The president's letter reaffirmed his position in favor of an open internet (pro-net neutrality) and reviewed his accomplishments of the past four years. ...

Biden v. Ryan: The Old Pro Takes On the Lying Kid

Biden v. Ryan: The Old Pro Takes On the Lying Kid | DispatchesUSA | Scoop.it
"That's a lot of malarkey," Biden said of Ryan's lies -- and then went on to slice and dice, smiling all the while.

In a lively contrast to last week’s presidential debate between President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, tonight’s match-up between Vice President Joe Biden and Republican rival Rep. Paul Ryan offered moments of riveting television as Biden used his populist persona to full effect against the wonkish and prevaricating Ryan.

In a discussion surprisingly heavy on foreign policy, the two also sparred over the federal budget, Medicare and reproductive rights -- with Ryan making the surprising claim that the courts should have no role in deciding the legality of abortion.

Five crazy things Paul Ryan actually believes

Five crazy things Paul Ryan actually believes | DispatchesUSA | Scoop.it

In the vice-presidential candidate's bizarro universe, some rapes are worse than others and abortions are never OK.

While Mitt Romney’s defining quality seems to be his inability to define any consistent viewpoints on the driving issues of the day, Paul Ryan is running on a pretty clear and consistent record. And unlike Romney, who changes his stance according to his audience, Paul Ryan has clung to extremely unpopular ideas even in the face of public backlash.

Of course, now that he’s the GOP candidate for vice president, Paul Ryan insists that Romney’s views are the ones driving their swerving, accident-prone limousine of a campaign — but since Paul Ryan is in the running to be a heartbeat away from taking the wheel, we shouldn’t lose sight of his vision for America. ...
