As Colorado wildfires continue to worsen, only moderate laws proposed

As Colorado wildfires continue to worsen, only moderate laws proposed | American Government | Scoop.it
Despite recommendations from a task force convened by the governor to deal with Colorado's most-pressing wildfire issues, lawmakers this legislative session so far have avoided big-fix measures in favor of smaller, more piecemeal approaches.
Bryant Mitchell's insight:

I find this very interesting because it has a lot to do with what we just learned in government. It talks about adopting a grant program for fire department safety. This would probably be a project grant. It also listed other possiblities such as providing tax credits for clearing brush, to counties placing limits on the rights of rachers burning land. It is interesting to see how the state we live in thinks about preventing wild fires that were so bad last summer. Especially, with the little snowfall we are recieving this winter, it will be beneficial to create a safer, cleaner outdoors. As Smoky the Bear says: only you can prevent wildfires.

Venezuela: Death of Beauty Queen in Robbery Rattles Country

Venezuela: Death of Beauty Queen in Robbery Rattles Country | American Government | Scoop.it
Mónica Spear, a soap opera actress and former Miss Venezuela, and her ex-husband were killed by robbers after their car broke down, the authorities said.
Bryant Mitchell's insight:

I think it is sad that there is an outcry toward the rate of violence crime in the region of Venezuala started when someone famous was killed, but not when other crimes happened in the past. However, I am glad that it drew people to start noticing and to start taking action. The more people there are aware of the crime, the safer the region will be. Additionally, the death of this figure is sad and it is hard to see a robbery take a family away from one another and change a five year old kids life forever.

Utah’s 3 Arguments, and Counting, Against Gay Marriage

Utah’s 3 Arguments, and Counting, Against Gay Marriage | American Government | Scoop.it
In the battle over Utah’s ban on same-sex marriage, the state has changed tack multiple times, refining its argument for the Supreme Court to include the benefits of “gender diversity” in parenting.
Bryant Mitchell's insight:

I think it is interesting on how the Supreme court did not take a side on Utah's several shifting arguments. They just issued a two sentence long demand that halted same-sex marriages in Utah. Ulitmately, however, they said that the decision would lie in Judge Shelby's hands while an appeals court considers the case. That will happen over the next couple of months, and the state's position may evolve further. This is a serious debate in today's current events, and I think it is important to see the change across America as it furthers.
