10 ways to manage career expectations
Marketing Interactive
Career planning is not something that many of us do very well, or even think about at all.
Cruise Line Class's insight:

At dinner last night with my husband began asking our parents questions regarding how they began their careers.  It was interesting that each of our parents told stories of how their careers just happened by chance.

So much has changed since then.  Long are the days when a person could start a job, and plan on retiring at the same company as long as they did their work well and showed up each day on time.

While it is true that the landscape has changed, I believe that there are so many opportunties as long as we do our homework, have a plan, keep up with required skills, and are flexible in how we repackage our skills and experience.

Please take a moment to read this article.  I hope you enjoy, and please do let us know your thoughts and any advice you have to our readers.

How to Get a Job at Google

How to Get a Job at Google | Career Advice, Tips, Trends, Resources | Scoop.it

“There are five hiring attributes we have across the company,” explained Bock. “If it’s a technical role, we assess your coding ability, and half the roles in the company are technical roles. For every job, though, the No. 1 thing we look for is general cognitive ability, and it’s not I.Q. It’s learning ability. It’s the ability to process on the fly. It’s the ability to pull together disparate bits of information. We assess that using structured behavioral interviews that we validate to make sure they’re predictive.”

#Career Advice from #Oprah

#Career Advice from #Oprah | Career Advice, Tips, Trends, Resources | Scoop.it
Cruise Line Class's insight:

I have had alot of people ask me , Trish I am working two jobs, and living paycheck to paycheck.  How can I entertain finding my life purpose, and being in a career that I love when I am too busy putting food on the table?

Great question.  Then I share my story.  I have walked in your shoes where I worked 2-3 jobs for years.  I even remember driving a $400 car that I bought when my engine blew, and had to rely on that car for over two years.  I worked the morning shift serving tables, the night shift bartending, and worked other jobs in between.

What got me through everything is knowing that there was a light at the end of the tunnel.  That I was progressing towards my career aspirations.  (even though the pace was slow)

I absolutely love this advice from Oprah, and hope that it inspires you too.  I truly believe that it is because I worked so hard for everything, and that things did not come easily to me that I have the work ethic that I have today.

Would love to hear your story to inspire others.

If you were successful in the past but have eased out of the game, either abruptly or by slowing down a little bit more every day, ask yourself why. If it's intentional, something you really want for yourself, fine. Enjoy your life and don't look back. But if it's a case of feeling that you have to move out of the way, that you can't run with your younger colleagues, that there's nothing left for you to contribute, then maybe it's time to reevaluate, create a plan, and get back in the pool.

162 Future Jobs: Preparing for Jobs and #Careers that Don’t Yet Exist

162 Future Jobs: Preparing for Jobs and #Careers that Don’t Yet Exist | Career Advice, Tips, Trends, Resources | Scoop.it

A recent article in The Economist quotes Bill Gates as saying at least a dozen job types will be taken over by robots and automation in the next two decades, and these jobs cover both high-paying and low-skilled workers. Some of the positions he mentioned were commercial pilots, legal work, technical writing, telemarketers, accountants, retail workers, and real estate sales agents.

Indeed, as I’ve predicted before, by 2030 over 2 billion jobs will disappear. Again, this is not a doom and gloom prediction, rather a wakeup call for the world.

Take a Step Back to Propel Your #Career Forward

Take a Step Back to Propel Your #Career Forward | Career Advice, Tips, Trends, Resources | Scoop.it
Take a Step Back to Propel Your Career Forward
blogs.hbr.org (blog)
She made phone calls so reliably and effectively, they soon recognized her abilities and asked her to become a regional field director, launching a new career.
Cruise Line Class's insight:

What an outstanding article with tons of gold nuggets for anyone despite of where you are in your careers!  I particularly agree with this statement:

"The kind of dramatic professional advancement we’d all like to see — big promotions, the opportunity to work on high-profile projects, or access to interesting opportunities — only come around when we’ve made an investment in our careers. And that investment almost always involves foregoing short-term gratification and, indeed, appearing to take a step backward."

My advice:  So many times in your career you will be tempted to go off your true path for short-term gains.  For example you could be offered a position where you will gain thousands of dollars a year in the short-term; however, you have to ask yourself these questions:

Does this position take me closer to my long-term goal?  Although I am not making more salary in the short-term, am I making an important investment in me where I will gain critical knowledge, experience, and skills that will groom me for my next career ladder step?

OR

Am I staying in a comfortable position solely because of the money, and I am not growing skills necessary to grow my career?

Am I accepting a new position solely because of the money, and the position is not consistent with my career plan -- and is taking me farther away from my career goals.

It is important to mention that most of us will change our career plans many times throughout our careers.  What I urge everyone to do is to be deliberate in your career choices.  Ask yourself those tough decisions before you take that next step.

Most importantly think in the long-term, and don't throw away your career aspirations for short-term gains.
