I know that we all want to move up in our roles and reach our potential as soon as possible...right?
Then my advice is:
1. Think not what your supervisor can do for you -- instead think about how you can contribute to your supervisor's success.
-Find out what your supervisor's priorities are in terms of their individual goals and department objectives
-Find out what your supervisor's communication preferences are
-Find out what your supervisor's expectations are beyond the job description
-Find out your supervisor's important meetings and deadlines
-Get to know your supervisor as a person and take interest
Now: Ask yourself what can I do to anticipate information, reports, and support my supervisor will need. What can I do to add maximum value to support what is important to my supervisor.
2. Think not what your team and colleagues can do for you -- instead think about how you can contribute to your team's success.
-Find out what the team's shared goals are
-Find out what mission critical projects your teammates are working on
-Ask your supervisor if you can do some cross-training within your department
-Get to know your colleagues as people and take interest in them
Now: Ask yourself what can I do to help my team succeed? What can I do to support my colleagues' success?
---- I can go on and on; however, can you see where I am going with this? Getting a promotion means that you are successfully adding value to your supervisor, your team, and the organization. It means that you take the initiative to make improvements and focus on what can be done, instead of making excuses.
Be a positive role model for the company, and avoid ever talking poorly about the company or others.
Follow these tips and they will certainly help in your efforts on getting promoted!
Starting a new job and meeting new people can be exciting, rewarding, and at times stressful.
Decide to make the best first impression.
1. Before you start, do more than what is expected. Know as much as you can about the company, recent articles, press releases, products, services, customers, and company history.
2. Ask for your job description before you start. Review thoroughly and bring a copy with you.
3. When you are being trained a specific function...take notes. It will show you take your job role seriously. It will also prevent you from asking questions on tasks that you have already been taught.
4. Get to know you colleagues, and take interest in who they are.
5. Find out what your supervisor's expectations are beyond the job description.
6. Dress for success at work!
7. Have more than a to do list every day….Have a plan, and write down tasks, items to follow up, key telephone numbers, etc.

You are worth it -- so invest the time now to figure it out. Take the time to self reflect on what you enjoy, what your dreams and goals are. Understanding what and why those aspirations are important is an important first step.
