We should return to the original meaning of the Second Amendment

We should return to the original meaning of the Second Amendment | Amendment 2- Gun control | Scoop.it
John Weigant writes: The "Arms" referred to in the Second Amendment were single-shot, muzzleloading, handcrafted weapons that typically cost a year's wages. A skilled shooter could shoot about three rounds a minute.
Dylan Hallard's insight:

The second amendment reads, "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State."  Back when the constitution was written and this amendment was made, a militia was what would be a police officer today.  Also when the constitution refers to everybody having the right bear arms, "arms", were a single shot handcrafted gun.  I think that there is no reason for anybody to have an assault rifle for any purpose and that it should be more difficult to buy any gun.

Dylan Hallard's insight:

Gun control has recently been a topic that has many different arguments and views.  When the amendment was made in the 1700's, the world was much different and the views on this amendment weren't nearly the same the people have now.  In 2008 the Supreme Court affirmed that the Second Amendment is a right to have a handgun in your home for self-defense.  Many people think that we have the second amendmet to rebel against the government if it has too much power.  There have been many debates on the this amendment and the protection of the peoples rights.

Dylan Hallard's insight:

This article reads exactly what the second amendment states in the United States Constitution.  This article also explains how many people interpret the amendment and the beliefs of many people.  Many people believe that because the amendment states that the right to bear arms can't be infringed, everybody has the right to own a firearm.  The part of this amendment that is often not mentioned by people who like to or believe everyone could have a gun, is that more powerful guns are used for military.  Many people agree that  handguns should be allowed for self-defense, but disagree on the use of shotguns and rifles.

A Right of Insurrection?

A Right of Insurrection? | Amendment 2- Gun control | Scoop.it
Some opponents of gun control believe that firearms safeguard Americans' ability to rise up against the government.
Dylan Hallard's insight:

Some people disagree with the regulations on gun control for some different reasons. Some people say that they need firearms to protect themselves and their family. Others believe that they need firearms to rise up against the government. But many Americans misinterpret the Second Amendmnet where it reads that the militia can be called to defend the Laws of the Union and suppress insurrections, not start them. “The very purpose of the Second Amendment is to stop the government from disallowing people the means to defend themselves against tyranny,”  said a Texas Rep., adding that Obama’s gun control policies “are a direct attack on Americans that place all of us in danger.” A new Republican state legislator in Texas said he plans on filing a bill that t would make it a felony for any federal agent to enter the state for the purpose of enforcing laws that would restrict ownership of semi-automatic rifles or limit the size of gun magazines.

Dylan Hallard's insight:

The Supreme Court has yet to decide on a fair law to protect citizens rights and make getting guns more dificult.  Firearms were generally allowed in relation with military and for self defense.  The constitution only allows the right to own a handgun if you aren't part of a military.  There has been may arguments about current control.  Many people believe that the everyone should have the right to own guns for self defense that is protected under the second amendment.

Members of Congress from Tennessee want violent crimes to end but don't want to take away citizens rights to the second amendment.  President Obama is recommending renewing an expired ban on assault weapons and armor piercing bullets and limiting ammunition magazines to ten bullet.  Obama also is recommending a backround check on all gun sales and increse federal funding to hire police officers, counselors and psychologists in schools.  The cost for the president's plan is estimated to cost $500 million.  The plan represents the most comprehensive effort to tighten American gun laws in two decades.
