concerto no. 1 in e minor for guitar and oboe, by dave stafford

from the album classical - an eternal album
Dave Stafford's insight:
It's not exactly ambient, but here is a great example of how modern technology can create something truly remarkable, a full length classical concerto, but with a twist; the piece is built up, part by part, using a guitar synthesizer. I think that it is absolutely amazing that this can be done with a single device, without the use of a single 'real' instrument, but using only the Roland GR-55 guitar synth to reproduce a huge range of orchestral sounds, from woodwinds to strings to piano to church organ to xylophone. The quiet sections of the concerto are practically ambient anyway, so I am not too far off-topic, but it is still with a sense of wonder that I listen to this recording realising that it was created part by part from the fretboard of a modified Stratocaster. I hope you will enjoy it. :-)

dave stafford - islands of ginaz (HD)

this is a live guitar synthesizer loop improvisation. an "old style" ambient ebow loop, created using an ibanez destroyer guitar and a second generation ener...
Dave Stafford's insight:
This is a live, improvised energy bow (ebow) loop, taken from my 2011 album 'the haunting' - here, an ambient sound is created by layering many ebow guitars on top of each other, creating a hypnotic effect, which is mainly attributable to repetition, the repeating sound of the loop draws you in, and it gets 'stuck' in your brain, not unlike a catchy pop song with a repeated chorus. Ambient often, but not always, contains repetition, is minimal, and/or is quiet and reflective in nature. This is one of many ambient improvs, performed live, on the pureambientHD channel on YouTube, along with other more active pieces as well.

Scape - Generative Music - Creative apps for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch

Scape - Generative Music - Creative apps for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch | Ambient Music | Scoop.it
Dave Stafford's insight:
Scape is, of course, the biggest competitor of Mixtikl, and at this point in time (2013) Scape and Mixtikl are two of the very finest generative music applications available for iOS, both are generative. Scape is mostly ambient in nature as well, whereas Mixtikl also creates active music. But both are supremely suited for the creation of ambient music, albeit using very different methods; in Scape, the user 'draws a picture' using shapes that represent different sounds, filters or effects, and once built, this 'picture' is the finished piece of music. Anyone can do it, no musical knowledge required... Whereas in Mixtikl, you add sounds to 'cells', add effects, and you 'mix' your piece on a mixer screen. But both apps contain a lot of great sounds, a lot of great ambient sounds...so the pieces they generate, sound good! Scape is almost like getting hundreds of new Eno albums, whereas Mixtikl gives you unlimited freedom to create any kind of generative music, ambient or not. Essential tools for today's ambient musician.

Dave Stafford's insight:
After many years of either being out of print or only available through my website, www.pureambient.com, I am very happy to say that the bulk of my back catalogue is now finally, available on bandcamp, from 1992 or earlier, to the present, and much of it is ambient in nature. Have a listen, as they say :-)

dave stafford - ethereal evening (HD)

this is a live addictive synth performance via the m-audio sono 88 prokeys. "ethereal evening" is the next piece - a return now to live ambient performance, ...
Dave Stafford's insight:
Ambient of course, can be created in many ways. Guitar synth, guitar, energy bow guitar, using a looper, and a nice reverb unit, is one common way, but, it is of course also very possible and very common, to produce ambient using synthesizers. This video is an example of how this can be done even in a completely live setting, by selecting the right sound, and choosing the notes you play with great care, you can creat beautiful ambient music with just a keyboard. This is one of many ambient tracks you will find on the synthesizerHD channel on YouTube, along with other active tracks as well. In this example, there is no looper being used, but some repetition does exist, performed manually, a recurring motif, so this adds to the ambience of the piece, manual vs. machine repetition. No matter how you creat your tracks, it's how they sound in the end that matters...and I think this example shows that you do not necessarily need expensive looping gear to creat ambient music, just patience, luck and some skill, too...it is enormously satisfying to play pieces like 'ethereal evening' and 'ethereal night', I truly enjoy this process, almost as much as looping energy bow guitar...

Warp's artists create groundbreaking music, videos and cinema; Aphex Twin, Shane Meadows, Grizzly Bear, Boards of Canada, Battles, Richard Ayoade... Watch and listen here.
Dave Stafford's insight:
The new home of Brian Eno, one of the founding fathers of ambient music. Eno's contribution to ambient music cannot be underestimated, from groundbreaking works such as 'discreet music', 'music for airports' and 'thursday afternoon' to his famed music and light installations to his latest works available here at warp records. Without Eno, there would be no ambient.

Mixtikl | Generative Music Mixer with Tap Play & Visualiser featuring 'inmo' generative music tech | Intermorphic Music App Software for iPhone iPad iPod touch Android Mac Windows | Ambient Music | Scoop.it
For iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android, Mac, Windows, PC, VST/AU. Computer Music - 'You'll find Mixtikl to be a generative powerhouse'
Dave Stafford's insight:
Mixtikl is a remarkable, generative music application that I've been working with for about three months now, and this incredible 'music mixer' has allowed me to create a very large catalogue of mostly ambient (and some active tracks as well) in a relatively short time, and for a generative tool, the quality of the included samples is top notch; it's easy to learn and use; and it continues to surprise me each time I work with it. It seems particularly suited to ambient music creation, and I've created some tracks with it that rival loops or ambient pieces I've done with real instruments. That's not an easy thing to do, intermorphic (the manufacturer of mixtikl) have done a great job with this tool, and I believe that I will continue to develop more music with it over time, and the possibilities are endless, you can add in your own samples, which I have yet to trial, so I can imagine creating a massive selection of homemade samples to add to the already excellent selection of samples within mixtikl...in a sense, this makes it infinitely expandable, and that is a very good thing indeed.
