French Onion Soup with Tomato Juice | Amazing Soup Recipes

French Onion Soup with Tomato Juice | Amazing Soup Recipes | Amazing Soup Recipes | Scoop.it

Enjoy this delicious and authentic French onion soup recipe because it is easy to prepare and the results are so good. Whoever first thought of...

Christine Szalay-Kudra's insight:

I love the idea of adding tomato juice to a French onion soup recipe. Although the purists might have something to say about daring to interfere with such a classic French recipe, tomato always adds a sweetness to your dish so it is sure to work its charm on French onion soup.

At first glance this might look like an ordinary French onion soup but look closer and you will see the red hue in it, underneath the crunchy, cheese-covered crouton. Whenever I fancy something hot and tasty, French onion soup is never far from my mind, but it can be fun to play with the original recipe and see which other ingredients work with the flavor, and tomatoes go beautifully.

'Cooking nun' wins TV's 'Chopped,' hopes to spotlight issue of hunger

'Cooking nun' wins TV's 'Chopped,' hopes to spotlight issue of hunger | Amazing Soup Recipes | Scoop.it

CHICAGO - Sister Alicia Torres became the "Chopped" champion on the Food Network's reality TV cooking show, winning $10,000 for Our Lady of the Angels Mission to provide more home-cooked meals for neighbors in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood.

Christine Szalay-Kudra's insight:

My husband became a “Chopped” fanatic while receiving treatment for a diabetic related issue. The only thing he could do during his treatment was watch the show. He tells me “I really love the specials with volunteers that help people out they show that giving is its own reward” He really admired the school lunch ladies as they demonstrated their skills and put to rest the myths about cafeteria food.

This chopped episode showed of those that help feed others. There is a growing movement in volunteer circles to provide more than just basics that when you treat someone’s empty stomach and the person as another human they are more than just feed interlay. I am a huge proponent that in a country that has so much it is reprehensible to let even one person go hungry. That by allowing the chain to have weak links we are all weakened. My hat is off to the Food Network for its continued effort to spotlight the most important part of the food industry.

Food banks serve same number of people, but money doesn't go as far - HeraldNet

Food banks serve same number of people, but money doesn't go as far - HeraldNet | Amazing Soup Recipes | Scoop.it

MARYSVILLE - Dell Deierling and his team of volunteers are putting together about 700 bags of Thanksgiving. The bags are full of food: flour,......

Christine Szalay-Kudra's insight:

A couple of days ago on my American Food scoop I told you about the house cutting food stamp spending at a time when more Americans than ever are on them. The problem goes deeper as many none-profits find the food dollars they have to work with are not going as far as they once did either as any of us that have been to the grocery store know all too well.

At a time that the government is cutting back it makes the need for private funding to try and keep pace, the problem is – “The dollars that we had set aside aren't going as far,” said Bill Kraut, director of the Volunteers of America Food Bank in Everett.” At this time of year I would encourage anyone who can to do what they can to help out anything is better than nothing so even small contribution can add up to make a big difference.

Let's eat: Corn Chowder - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette | Amazing Soup Recipes | Scoop.it

PG tested Maybe you thought to freeze some locally grown corn this summer or maybe you didn’t. No worries. This hearty cool-weather soup

Christine Szalay-Kudra's insight:

In my house chowder is a food group I mean what proper New Englander doesn’t have a favorite clam chowder recipe but even more loved by all my guys is corn chowder. The lesser known of the chowders and often under sold as more like peasant food it is a hardy and filling meal come fall when the corn harvest is in and corn on the cob is plentiful.

We like to grill the corn and then cut it off the cob for our family recipe but I came across this recipe and it caught my eye. Ok I have to admit the bacon caught my eye and in our house bacon is a must in any good chowder recipe.

Christine Szalay-Kudra's insight:

If you haven’t tried a dessert soup yet this recipe is a great place to start. Soup may take some getting used to as a dessert item but once you get past the cold and sweet aspect and start to forget it is soup you will be wondering why it took so long to make the crossover. It is such a huge part of world cuisine and there isn’t a culture that comes to mind that doesn’t have some variation of it on the menu. I was surprised once I put aside the stereotypical ideas about soup just how much I loved it. Give it a try today and I am sure I’ll make a soup convert out of you too.

Christine Szalay-Kudra's insight:

I'm sure many people love milk-based soups. However, I'm of the mind that meat or vegetables are the best main accompaniment. I am not against a cheddar-broccoli mix - yum yum - but beef barley with carrots is divine, or maybe a chicken noodle with green beans. Over 48 Million Americans Can't Afford to Buy Food, 2016 Hunger Report Finds

Over 48 Million Americans Can't Afford to Buy Food, 2016 Hunger Report Finds | Amazing Soup Recipes | Scoop.it

Many health-related problems Americans face are directly related to hunger and malnutrition, according to a new report by the ecumenical Christian anti-poverty group Bread for the World.

Christine Szalay-Kudra's insight:

I can’t harp on this subject enough but “Over 48 Million Americans Can't Afford to Buy Food, 2016 Hunger Report Finds.” In a country of plenty and with so many sharing the riches it is a shame so many unseen face go unnoticed and that hunger is so prevalent. I know this is a food site and normally I focus on what makes it so good but when there is none to go around at all it is impossible to make it anything but bad. I cannot stress enough the importance of helping others with so little we cannot afford to turn our backs on these people they are our future and if we starve a number of our future it will affect all of us eventually. So during the holidays remember no help is too little other than the help not offered.

How Living With MS Is Like Cooking Mushrooms - Everyday Health (blog)

How Living With MS Is Like Cooking Mushrooms - Everyday Health (blog) | Amazing Soup Recipes | Scoop.it

There are many ways to get the best out of a mushroom when cooking… just as there are many ways to get the best from life with MS.

Christine Szalay-Kudra's insight:

Having MS myself your title caught my eye. I never looked at MS as a food group or at least one I wanted to try. But like yourself it chose me and although I was fortunate to go many years without much real affect on quality of life slowly it crept its way into my life and started changing the way I cooked to steal a thought of yours.

I have to admit I have had many a days of outright resentment to my illness after all at my age I thought I should be able to do as I once did it really hit home when my oldest two sons went on a hike up a mountain I had climbed many times and I was left with nothing of the experience then the pictures they took from the top it was at this point that MS really hit home. I wish I had the things I use to have and it has been a hard journey to find comfort in the things that seem so different to me now.

Maybe you have shown me that my illness is just in need of a different cooking method and to someone that runs a recipe network that I can do although cooking these days is more often than not in the form of instructing others including my wonderful oldest son that has taken over preparation of the evening meals. Maybe I have just been looking at the wrong kinds of mushrooms and maybe I need to relish in the fact that I can do this although it may be different.

Thank you for sharing your experience it was very helpful to know that there are others that had to relearn to cook and just end up doing it better.

West Texas Food Bank sees 'dramatic' increase in emergency food boxes - Midland Reporter-Telegram | Amazing Soup Recipes | Scoop.it

FILE - John Crooks, left, and Cindy Rice, with the West Texas
Food Bank, sort through boxes of non-perishable items collected
during the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, May 14 at the U.S.

Christine Szalay-Kudra's insight:

I have devoted a lot of space in my various scoop topics as the fight against hunger is a major cause dear to my heart. It seems that yet again another spot in the land of plenty seems to be missing the table of many Americans. At this time of year it seems this year the demand is greater than ever to get food to those without. We cannot stress enough that with just a little caring and awareness on the part of others we can make a difference in many people’s lives. A holiday centered around a feast is not a true feast unless we share the bounty with all. So once again I encourage anyone who can give even a little to share the love of food with someone that has little.

Is the Food at Fancy Restaurants Just “Hocus Pocus”? - Slate Magazine (blog) | Amazing Soup Recipes | Scoop.it

Answer by Jonas Mikka Luster, former cook, blogger: Oh, so much to answer. First, you don't want to eat food made by people who “spent a day in cooking sch

Christine Szalay-Kudra's insight:

Article looks at why you will not find “chefs” behind the magic curtain of the kitchen at the stove. The job of the head chef is business and business development. The art of building a team that can execute their vision of food and do it day in and day out. This doesn’t take a master chef but rather dedicated cooks that can master their part of the overall vision. Think about it a restaurant gets calls for X dishes a night and each must be a perfect match of the previous one today and ten months from now. Face it master chefs are always improvising although some top restaurants might function this way most do not the customer wants the same food they had last time every time.

Christine Szalay-Kudra's insight:

It is nice to see big corporate food giant icons making changes to keep up with the ever changing market and the wiser more educated consumer. In today’s day people are thinking a bit more about what is inside the package and what went into what they are about to eat. This cannot be any more welcome as we all need to wake up to the fact that what goes into our bodies has a large part in what we get out of them.
