At CPI, we strongly support this bill because we believe that dementia care training can help raise the standard of care for the millions of people affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related illnesses.

A new bill, Minnesota HF 2437, has been introduced in the Minnesota state legislature. It requires training on Alzheimer's disease for all long-term care facilities in Minnesota.

Myth: Seniors Don’t Have Much Left to Contribute

If contribute is defined as being able to haul heavy boxes around for 12 hours straight, then no, seniors don’t have much left to “contribute.” But taking a look at the years they’ve lived and experience they’ve accumulated says otherwise. Seniors can be a goldmine in terms of wealth of knowledge and wisdom, and tend to have a stronger work ethic than youngsters.

"Although they can't chat with each other, Theo and Corrie will often sit for hours, holding hands and lovingly look into each other's eyes. Every so often, Corrie offers a smile, a laugh, a squeeze of the hand. At least part of her memory, it seems, is still intact, though she can't verbalize much these days."

Funds include $4 million to train health professionals on issues related to Alzheimer's disease.

In light of the growing need to help all people affected by the disease, President Obama has signed a funding bill into law that contains a $122 million increase for Alzheimer's research, education, and caregiver support.

In order for that to really happen, it requires a Dementia Capable Society—individuals from all walks of life working together to make life better for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

The word that came up the most often may come as a surprise: Patience.
Becky B's insight:

We received answers that spoke of dementia as a thief that steals the person away from the inside out, of caregivers that now have the disease themselves, even of apologizing to spouses now while the person can remember to, just in case. All this is true of the devastating effect Alzheimer’s and related dementias has on entire families.
 
Yet the word that came up the most often was perhaps just as insightful: Patience.

Nope! I totally agree. Dementia taught me patience because patience was the only thing that worked with my Mom. If  I tried to rush her, she would only stand and look at me as though I was a tree.


Move slowly and tell them what you're doing if you're assisting someone with dressing, showering, bathing. Patience.

Two new bills have been introduced to help ensure the best care for assisted living residents in Florida who have dementia.

Staff who have regular contact with residents who have Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia must complete four hours of initial dementia-specific training within three months of beginning employment. Direct caregivers must complete the required initial training and four additional hours of training within nine months of beginning employment.
