"If we are truly going to create the best possible living situation for our seniors, every element in every long-term care community needs to support and enhance quality of life for the people living and working there." - Virginia Pflanz, Dementia Care Specialists

Read more about what Virginia discovered at the recent Environments for Aging Magazine conference about how to customize the physical environment to maximize the remaining abilities of a person with Alzheimer’s/dementia.

What struck me was how often I heard that while a firm “does” memory care, they want to do it better.

In One Word: What Has Dementia Taught You?

In One Word: What Has Dementia Taught You? | Alzheimer's and Dementia Care | Scoop.it
The word that came up the most often may come as a surprise: Patience.
Becky B's insight:

We received answers that spoke of dementia as a thief that steals the person away from the inside out, of caregivers that now have the disease themselves, even of apologizing to spouses now while the person can remember to, just in case. All this is true of the devastating effect Alzheimer’s and related dementias has on entire families.

Yet the word that came up the most often was perhaps just as insightful: Patience.

Move slowly and tell them what you're doing if you're assisting someone with dressing, showering, bathing. Patience.
