This Win-Win Idea Can Make Caregivers’ Jobs Easier

This Win-Win Idea Can Make Caregivers’ Jobs Easier | Alzheimer's and Dementia Care | Scoop.it
One experience really stays with me. It was when a coworker found a passion of one of my new residents. Helen was new to living in a nursing home when she moved in. It took some time for her to adjust to her new life, but even after she had spent some time with us, she rarely talked.

It wasn’t until one of the activity assistants started talking with her that we learned that she loved baseball, particularly our local Milwaukee Brewers/Braves. Once we learned she was such a fan, Activities found her a radio and a donated blanket with a large Milwaukee Brewers logo. We also made arrangements with Dietary so during Brewers’ games we could bring a food tray to Helen’s room so she wouldn’t miss a thing.

What sets a memory care facility apart from the rest?

There are many things to consider when choosing a community for your loved one, but probably the most important factor is trust. Can you trust that a place will provide the most attentive, capable, and compassionate care for your loved one? That staff are trained to effectively respond to the distress that people with dementia often feel? That families often feel? Can you trust that staff will get to know your loved one’s history, likes, dislikes, and remaining abilities—and build their care around what your loved one wants, needs, and is still capable of doing?

10 Essential Self-Care Tips for Dementia Caregivers

10 Essential Self-Care Tips for Dementia Caregivers | Alzheimer's and Dementia Care | Scoop.it

If you struggle with the stress of caregiving, I feel your pain. I've looked after the safety and well-being of a family member with dementia for eight years. During that time, I've wrestled with at least nine out of the 13 risks in long-term caregiving that Eskenazi describes in her article. She also offers 10 tips for taking care of yourself, and I've listed them here with some explanation based on my experiences:

Becky B's insight:

6. Change “guilt” to “regret.”
For me, the initial regret I felt when my loved one started declining turned into guilt about how I couldn't stop her decline, how I could never do enough to make things better, and how it seems that I've never been able to find the right living situation for her. But Eskenazi puts that into perspective: "Guilt is you did something wrong," she writes, "regret is that you are in a difficult situation and sometimes you have to make difficult decisions, but they are not wrong."
