While US courts have started to make it clear that recording police on duty is perfectly legal, it appears that France is going in the opposite direction. In a recent ruling, a French court has ordered ISPs to block access to a website, which hosts videos and photos taken by citizens demonstrating police misconduct. Apparently, the court claims that such videos and photos, in conjunction with the names and affiliations of the officers seen, is a violation of privacy rights.

Francia bloquea una web que informaba sobre la policía

Un juez francés ha ordenado a seis proveedores de acceso de aquel país que bloqueen la web Copwatch Nord-Ile-de-France. El sitio, que tiene como objetivo "luchar por la transparencia de la información" y contra "la violencia e impunidad policial", había sido denunciado por el Ministerio del Interior por ofrecer en sus páginas acceso a datos personales de agentes de la autoridad.

With hundreds of thousands of warnings already sent out, chances are that soon most French Internet users will know someone who has received one. Unsurprisingly, scammers are now riding the wave of publicity and uncertainty by sending out fake Hadopi emails which trick users into requesting more information about their ‘infringements’ which cost them money.

French Data Protection Authority Moves Forward with Privacy Seal Project : : Privacy and Information Security Law Blog | Aspectos Legales de las Tecnologías de Información | Scoop.it

On September 22, 2011, new provisions under the French Data Protection Authority’s (“CNIL’s”) internal regulation came into force. The CNIL recently amended its regulations to incorporate a new chapter that sets forth a specific procedure for issuing privacy seals in accordance with the French Data Protection Act. The Act authorizes the CNIL to “issue a quality label to products or procedures intended to protect individuals with respect to processing of personal data, once [the CNIL] has recognized them as in compliance with the provisions of the Act.”
