The Johnny Burnette Trio: Inspiring the Black Keys

The Johnny Burnette Trio: Inspiring the Black Keys | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

With its five Grammy nominations, The Black Keys’ “El Camino” remains one of the more scrutinized entries in the band’s catalog. Inquiring minds want to know, what musical well did the band draw from this time? Where did they find all those shitty-looking vans? And who exactly is Derrick T. Tuggle?

I’ll leave those last two questions alone and devote this post to one of the main inspirations for the song Lonely Boy – The Johnny Burnette Trio, also known simply as the Rock and Roll Trio.

Queens of the Stoneage in Hilarious Mockumentary: Secrets of the Sound

Queens of the Stoneage in Hilarious Mockumentary: Secrets of the Sound | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

Since hearing some exciting news about the forthcoming Queens of the Stone Age album—namely the inclusion of Dave Grohl on drums and former bassist Nick Oliveri’s possible appearance —it’s great to see the band’s still on track.

In a recent video posted by the band on YouTube, we get a maybe-too-inclusive look at the band’s studio, which shows Matt Berry and Steve Agee catching the band in its element. In the clip, titled Secrets of the Sound, we see a cluttered studio space, band members’ putting their vanity on display and some lively discussions of Patrick Swayze.

Dr. John with Dan Auerbach, 'Ice Age'

Dr. John with Dan Auerbach, 'Ice Age' | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

New Orleans legend gets a hand from Black Keys frontman on 'Ice Age'This past April, Dr. John celebrated the release of his album Locked Down with a show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and in this clip, the New Orleans R&B maestro gets a hand on "Ice Age" from Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach, who produced Locked Down. Dr. John looks his shamanic best and vibes out on keyboards as Auerbach provides the slinky, funky lead riff. Dr. John jumps into an expended freeform keyboard solo halfway through, but the wide-ranging percussion section is the most impressive thing, clattering and banging away for a soulful jamboree.

Ray Collins of the Mothers of Invention Dies

Ray Collins of the Mothers of Invention Dies | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

Though Mr. Collins hired Frank Zappa and with him recorded avant-garde rock, his tastes were more mainstream. Mr. Collins, who shared a love for doo-wop with Mr. Zappa, was the lead singer for the band’s debut album, “Freak Out!” (1966), which mixed satirical lyrics with music that ranged from straightforward rock to atonal experimentation, and its follow-up, “Absolutely Free” (1967). He quit the band after that recording, though he returned for “Cruising With Ruben & the Jets,” a doo-wop concept album, and sang on some of Mr. Zappa’s later recordings.

New CDs: Bat for Lashes, the Coup, Bomba Estéreo, Lord Huron | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

New releases from Bat for Lashes, the Coup, Bomba Estéreo, A. C. Newman and Lord Huron. Passions run high, and so do musical ambitions, in the songs of Natasha Khan, the English songwriter who records as Bat for Lashes. “Never whisper you a great love story/Only scream and cry and moan,” she sings on her third album, “The Haunted Man” (Capitol). With the unabashed drama of songwriters like Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel or Björk, she writes about desires and furies so great that all nature bends to them,
