Boston Cops Crack Down on Moshing | Music News | Rolling Stone

Boston Cops Crack Down on Moshing | Music News | Rolling Stone | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it
Boston police are cracking down on moshing and slam-dancing at concerts in the city. Cops have cited an incident at a Flogging Molly show at the House of Blues on February 21st for a license violation, noting that 60 concertgoers engaged in "aggressive mosh pit dance," which resulted in people colliding into one another and getting knocked to the floor. This activity – which is pretty much par for the course at hardcore punk and metal gigs – violated safety rules, and the club was cited because security did not intervene.

"The safety of our patrons is the top priority," the House of Blues said in a statement. Representatives of the venue say they are working with city officials to "address concerns about moshing and other forms of expressive dance."

Old music: The Daily Flash – Jack of Diamonds

Old music: The Daily Flash – Jack of Diamonds | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

David Marsh: These 60s psych-rockers play a winning hand with their take on a traditional Texas gambling song...Buried among the military bands and trad jazz in my Dad's record collection were one or two gems, notably a number of Lonnie Donegan 78s, perhaps the best of which was his version of this old gambling folk song. It reached No 14 in the UK singles chart in 1957 and I was thrilled by Donegan's energetic performance, delivered at breakneck speed.

Jack of Diamonds has a long history. The lyrics may date from the American civil war and the tune from even earlier, and there are numerous versions, including recordings by Blind Lemon Jefferson, John Lee Hooker, Waylon Jennings, Fairport Convention – using an adaptation by Bob Dylan – and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. My favourite, though, has to be this comprehensive 1966 deconstruction by the Daily Flash, a Seattle quartet who moved to California and managed to rub shoulders with various big names (they were signed by the manager of Buffalo Springfield) without ever quite finding success themselves – although they did appear in a totally barking episode of The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.

Paul Weller - Sonik Kicks

Paul Weller - Sonik Kicks | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

An emotional, experimental ride, Weller’s 11th solo LP is brilliant stuff. Thirty years ago, Paul Weller was number one. The Jam's A Town Called Malice spent three weeks at the top of the charts, its Motown bassline bustling, its finger clicks rustling. Watch its video now, and the 23-year-old at the middle of it has hardly changed in some ways. His Woking vowels are still 'ow's-yer-father; the haircut's still cockatoo-daft. But he sings a line in its first verse that's practically become his motto: "Stop apologising for the things you've never done, because time is short and life is cruel, and it's up to us to change."

Folk-rockers revive Woody Guthrie at Union Transfer

Folk-rockers revive Woody Guthrie at Union Transfer | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it
New Multitudes, the album on which Jay Farrar, Jim James, Anders Parker, and Will Johnson set unused Woody Guthrie lyrics to music, is a work of intimate mystery, born of hours in the archives and sentiments that Guthrie himself either abandoned or left buried on purpose. But on stage at Union Transfer Tuesday night, the songs burst into the public sphere, pushing private thoughts into the open and converting whispers to a full-blooded shout.

BBC Review of La Sera - Sees the Light

BBC Review of La Sera - Sees the Light | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

La Sera ("the evening" in Italian) is the alias under which Katy Goodman recorded this record. Goodman has a better-known nickname: as Kickball Katy this Brooklynite came to prominence playing bass for Vivian Girls. Though, tellingly, she also fulfils the same duties in a Slits tribute band.
For her second solo outing Goodman mines some of the same slacker seams that Vivian Girls dig away at, but she also puts her own spin on things.

Colbert opens his interview with violin/whistler extraordinaire, Andrew Bird, with an offer for extreme fame, or as he calls it, “the Colbert bump.”

The Black Keys' Patrick Carney: 'Perfect music is boring'

The Black Keys' Patrick Carney: 'Perfect music is boring' | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it
Drummer says that people are 'losing an ear' for rougher art and claimed that too many artists were writing songs that sounded like they should be played in an elevator.

He said: Perfect music is boring music – that's the kind of stuff they play in an elevator. I think people are losing an ear for [raw music]. I think everybody has it but you've got to exercise it.
He went on to add: "When you turn on the radio it's all kind of perfectly sequenced, perfectly written, perfectly performed by machines...."

Past, Present, Future: Spin Magazine | Music For Kids Who Can't Read Good: Real life is for March!

Past, Present, Future: Spin Magazine | Music For Kids Who Can't Read Good: Real life is for March! | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

Music magazines, like most traditional journalism outlets, have struggled to find a footing in recent years. As we have seen on a larger scale with daily newspapers, established brands are trying to figure out their place in the conversation: Rolling Stone slimmed down and shifted their focus to encompass the overarching culture rather than just music, and Paste ceased print publication in August 2010 to focus on a purely digital role. In years past, music magazines acted as gatekeeper, presenting readers with the weekly/monthly/quarterly dispatch as distilled by the opinions of the staff. But the Internet has democratized the dissemination of information, meaning that most people find out about a band’s tour dates the same instant the editors of Rolling Stone do.

Which raises the question: do we even need a curator anymore?

BBC - Music - Review of The Shins - Port of Morrow

BBC - Music - Review of The Shins - Port of Morrow | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it

A record with so much clever and excitable beauty, yet strangely disappointing. The Shins’ last album, 2007’s Wincing the Night Away, was largely recorded by commander-in-chief James Mercer alone, just as it was when he first developed a side project from his day job as Flake Music’s frontman. So a studio construct isn’t in itself bad news, even if it was like discovering The Smiths and Belle & Sebastian were merely interchangeable vehicles for their frontmen.

Exclusive Stream: Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo Makes His Solo Debut | Music News | Rolling Stone | Alternative Rock | Scoop.it
Preview the guitarist's folky 'Between the Times and the Tides'... Lee Ranaldo has spent the past three decades building a body of work that includes his work as a member of Sonic Youth and a variety of experimental side projects, but Between the Times and the Tides marks the guitarist's first album as a solo singer-songwriter. "Over the summer I pulled out a bunch of my acoustic guitars and was just fooling around, and a whole bunch of songs just started generating, just kind of out of nowhere," Ranaldo told Rolling Stone last year. "What was refreshing about this was just to see all these songs sprout and actually kind of follow each other down this road and actually get completed."
