How Abusive Bosses Can Destroy Teamwork

How Abusive Bosses Can Destroy Teamwork | Alternative Dispute Resolution, Mediation, and Restorative Justice | Scoop.it

Hate your boss? You are not alone! We've all heard the story of the egotistical boss or the one that terrorizes and intimidates employees. There is increasing evidence that there is a clear link between bad leaders and employee health and productivity problems, which is turn, can be a huge liability for organizations. Recent research shows that abusive supervision leads to a variety of negative individual and organizational outcomes such as decreased job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and well-being and increased turnover, burnout, and hostility in the work environment. Most of that research has focused on the impact abusive bosses have on individual employees. Now there is new evidence to show the impact on teams.

10 Tips for Reducing Anger

10 Tips for Reducing Anger | Alternative Dispute Resolution, Mediation, and Restorative Justice | Scoop.it
The following is a partial distillation of ideas my colleague and I have more fully exposed in The Anger Fallacy. They're in no special order, except perhaps in as much as the first should probably come first. Some, admittedly, only touched on here, may require some unpacking (in particular 6, 7 and 8); but for those of you who cannot access the book, I'm happy to answer questions and to respond to comments!

Psychology studies suggest rising wealth means more jerks in S.F. If it seems that San Franciscans are getting more entitled and self-absorbed, a series of psychology studies performed at UC Berkeley indicates there could be a scientific reason: the city’s increasing wealth. Paul Piff, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and Social Behavior at UC Irvine (he moved from UC Berkeley just a few weeks ago), has spent the past decade conducting about 50 studies on how wealthy peop

The Power of Empathy in Conflict Resolution

The Power of Empathy in Conflict Resolution | Alternative Dispute Resolution, Mediation, and Restorative Justice | Scoop.it

Empathy has a profound ability to transform the way in which we resolve and understand conflicts. Empathy enables individuals to open their hearts and minds to not only see and understand the world from the perspective of others, but also to act in a way that is more likely to lead to a peaceful solution. In order to better understand empathy and its impact on conflict resolution, this paper will first address conflict, then empathy, how the two relate to one another, and finally, the essential nature of empathy in conflict resolution.
