Creating Tomorrow: Energy - New Zealand Herald

Creating Tomorrow: Energy
New Zealand Herald
In its current form, the industrialised global economy is utterly dependent on cheap energy. Without it, virtually nothing can happen. The great bulk of this energy comes from non-renewable fossil fuels.
Norma R. Burnson's insight:

Sustainable Food for the Globe.   Finally, this information -the facts-is getting through!  ..."It will be essential for countries and communities to adapt and innovate human ways of living creatively so that they have much lower energy requirements, while also striving to provide greater wellbeing, satisfaction and happiness for citizens.

It is obvious that the sensible time to get on with this challenge is now so that the worst aspects of disruption can be avoided. This requires a calibre of leadership that we are not currently seeing. Such leadership will include encouragement of alternative energy systems, which will flourish after countries and communities have accepted the logic of transitioning to low-energy ways of living."  *****

Pioneer project will use CO2 to develop aquaculture feed FIS The test production of omega-3 rich raw material for fish feed from algae will start at TCM as early as next year, providing a sustainable solution to an environmental problem and a...
Norma R. Burnson's insight:

Sustainable Food for the Globe.  Happy Monday, check out the great things people are doing in Norway!  ..."Carbon is becoming increasingly constrained in the global economy, whilst food demand from farmed fish is rising. It seems to be a smart solution to combine the two issues; using CO2, the by-product of the oil and gas sector, as a raw material for aquaculture,” pointed out Frank Ellingsen, Managing Director of TCM."  *****

Nearly a third of all the food produced in the world is lost or wasted, according to the UN's World Resources Institute.
Norma R. Burnson's insight:

Sustainable Food for the Globe. Time and time again, I read about how rescuing wasted food feed the worlds entire population.  Here is another group of people working to keep fresh fruits and vegetables last longer, all with natural products!  ..."Nearly a third of all the food produced in the world is lost or wasted, according to the UN's World Resources Institute. If we convert this mass into calories, it constitutes nearly a quarter of all food produced, which could have fed hungry and malnourished people around the world. But new technology that prolongs the life of fresh fruit and vegetables can help minimise this huge amount of waste."  *****

Norma R. Burnson's insight:

Sustainable Food for the Globe.  Check it out Monday, another little gem, reduction of carbon emissions by using solar energy! ..."Solar energy could create a variety of trade opportunities. GlassPoint Solar, which provides solar technology to oil fields, announced in March it was setting up a branch in Kuwait, aiming to attract industry interest in the solar applications it had developed for enhanced oil recovery. With many of the Emirate's fields starting to reach maturity, a number of enhanced recovery techniques are being deployed, with solar being an attractive option for powering steam injection technology, which is already in use elsewhere in the region."  *****

Permaculture as a Global Solution
Mother Earth News
Integrating alternative energy systems into small scale organic food production is just one way of carrying out Permaculture concepts.
Norma R. Burnson's insight:

Sustainable Food for the Globe.   It is a wonderful feeling to read articles that validate Sustainable Food for the Globe's position on how to get food production in abundance.  A few months ago the validation came from a study by the United Nations; we can feed the global population using permaculture and organic gardening.  Here it is again. ..."The “Green Hearts” of our time are creating new works of art in the forms of prairie restorations, backyard gardens, orchards, community gardens, CSA Farms and permaculture villages all of which are purifying our air, improving water quality, giving nutrients back to the soil, providing food to families, and creating habitats for pollinators. In gardens around the globe, we are planting seeds of change in fields of hope. People from all walks of life are uprising. A global transition or paradigm shift is occurring. We are becoming aware of, reflecting on, and brainstorming solutions for the damage that has been done to the earth.

We are getting back to our roots and respecting the land as our ancestors did long ago. Being self sufficient is no new endeavor, but wading through the muk that the industrial revolution and monoculture have left behind makes it seem new.

Permaculture is at the heart of the solution. Permaculture is alive with possibilities of positive change.  Read more: http://www.motherearthnews.com/organic-gardening/permaculture-a-global-solution-zbcz1405.aspx#ixzz36lnHjAEX.   *****

Norma R. Burnson's insight:

Sustainable Food for the Globe.  Focusing on farmers, food production and renewable energy!   ..."The classes will be held at the Student Organic Farm and on local farms to demonstrate ways farms can design structures to better utilize solar and water resources and create value-added products and reduce energy costs by converting plant and animal waste.  Some of the systems include passive solar techniques using 55-gallon drums, rainwater-collection systems, raised-bed vegetable production, black soldier fly composting, oil seed crop and biodiesel production, and systems for using water and compost to transfer and generate heat inside greenhouses."  *****
