*Final Farewell To Mike Lopez Jr.* it is hard to imagine anyone who followed football in Oregon in the 1980′s not remembering his name. It struck fear into many an opponent and his #19 was called and shouted often at Oregon State where he did some legendary things. He was one of the greatest athletes to every come out of Oregon and was an All American and named Gatorade Player Of The Year. This week, for the historic-only-to-me 100th Quaz, I wanted someone special. I’ve fielded countless suggestions, but never one that truly moved me. Then, a few weeks ago, I thought about my boyhood on the mean streets of Mahopac, N.Y. Specifically, I thought of a man who seemed to somehow have this life thing figured out, even from the heartbreaking nest of a wheelchair.
I grew up with Mark and Chris Dessi, and consider both to be good friends. Four years ago their father, Adrian Dessi, was first hit with the idea that he might—might—have ALS. The initial symptoms of Lou Gehrig’s Disease can be vague and misleading, so it’s difficult to diagnose. Yet, ultimately, Adrian’s symptoms could not be dismissed. He was experiencing, among other things, muscle twitches and fatigue........... Delete the scoop?

I am running in the 2013 Chicago Marathon in memory of my mother, Donna McNeice, my friend John Keator, and a family friend Bob O'Neil who all recently lost their battles to ALS. I am also running in memory of Michael Lopez (Team Cure ALS), who lead an inspirational battle with ALS and in the process has raised ALS awareness and was a source of hope to so many people. I want to help all those who are currently battling ALS. It is my goal to raise ALS Awareness and help find a cure for this dreaded disease.

We would like you to know that friends and support from individuals like you continues to bring our family extreme comfort and peace with our healing and loss of Michael after his battle with this horrendous disease ALS the last 17 years. We are family, brought together by such a horrendous disease, but yet for so many valuable and important reasons in our lives. Heavy rain and gusting winds didn’t keep runners and walkers from supporting the Emory ALS Center on Saturday at the 7th Annual FIESTA 15k & 5k Challenge. 400 participants, nearly 2/3 of the total registered showed up at the Forsyth Conference Center at Lanier Tech with ponchos, rain jackets, and smiling faces to run for those who no longer can.
FIESTA 15k runners took off in a heavy downpour while the FIESTA 5k race started about ten minutes later. Steve Wilcox and Susan Seibert crossed the finish line of the 15k race first, while Noah Schaich and Savannah Carnahan were the overall winners in the 5k event. A soggy Fun Run was held at 9:00am as happy children ran through puddles around the Lanier Tech campus.
“I really thought I would be the only person who showed up this morning,” shared Dr. Jonathan Glass, Director of the Emory ALS Center. He and the race organizers were humbled at the turnout, and proud of the amount raised for ALS research. The annual event raised $23,000 which benefits the Emory ALS Center.
One of the volunteers working on the race course, Amy Spivia, said, “being wet and cold for a few hours is nothing compared to what ALS patients go through.” 16 teams of fundraisers united to honor loved ones living with or who have died from the disease. Runners and walkers passed by rows of team signs as they started the course.
The event begins ALS Awareness Month each year on the first Saturday in May, and is hosted by Cure for ALS, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support advocacy and awareness for ALS.

On May 11 and 12, volunteers wearing yellow aprons and holding collection canisters will be stationed in front of stores throughout Wauconda and Lake Zurich as part of the Les Turner ALS Foundation’s Tag Days drives.
