Realtors raise $17K to aid ALS patients | #ALS AWARENESS #LouGehrigsDisease #PARKINSONS | Scoop.it

Santa Fe Realtors were busy over the last few months hosting events to enhance the community while devoting many volunteer hours to raise funds for charity. In October, the Santa Fe Association of Realtors' Community Services Committee hosted the Third Annual Richard Jay ALS Research Benefit, raising more than $17,000. Melissa Pippin-Carson, Richard Jay Golf Tournament Committee co-chair and SFAR president-elect, noted that this year’s funds will go directly to the ALS New Mexico Chapter to purchase iPads and amplifiers to help patients with breathing, swallowing, and the ability to speak. The event was named in honor of Richard Jay, a local Realtor diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) who passed away in the fall of 2014.

2016 Fiesta 5k/15k Challenge Proceeds benefit  ALS Center at Emory University

2016 Fiesta 5k/15k Challenge Proceeds benefit  ALS Center at Emory University | #ALS AWARENESS #LouGehrigsDisease #PARKINSONS | Scoop.it

All fundraising and donation proceeds will benefit the ALS Center at Emory University. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) can strike anyone; in fact it happens to 15 people each day in the U.S. The average life expectancy is only 2-5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS slowly takes away the ability to move, speak, swallow, and ultimately breathe. There is no cure for ALS so there are no survivors to tell their stories. For the 10th year the Emory ALS Center is the beneficiary of 100% of the proceeds from the FIESTA 5k/15k Challenge. The Emory ALS Center is one of the largest clinical centers for ALS in the United States. The Center provides true multidisciplinary care for patients and families with ALS and related disorders. Emorys physician-scientists continue to perform groundbreaking research, including developing surgical methods for delivery of therapeutics to the spinal cord. They search tirelessly for a cure for this devastating disease, focusing on basic mechanisms of motor neuron degeneration, genetics of ALS, and new experimental treatments. As the name suggests, the FIESTA 15k/5k Challenge is not your ordinary race. With two distances, we draw causal runners and walkers for the 5k and endurance runners for the 15k. The FIESTA 15k/5k Challenge brings entire families out for a morning of health & fitness, awareness for ALS, community outreach, and a celebration of life. Thank you for your generous support and for joining us to Celebrate Life...Imagine a Cure If you would like to volunteer or register for the FIESTA 5k/15k Challenge visit FiestaRunGA.com .

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is BACK! #everyaugustuntilacure #strikeoutALS | #ALS AWARENESS #LouGehrigsDisease #PARKINSONS | Scoop.it

Co-Founders Message:

You may ask, “Why do the Ice Bucket Challenge again?” And we understand. It’s easy to see it as a one-time event. But let’s make it more than that. Let’s make it into a movement. Even though we've raised $220 million worldwide, a new ALS treatment can cost up to $2 billion, while the costs of ALS patient care can be over $250,000 out-of-pocket per year, above and beyond what insurance covers. So grab a bucket and a camera and join us. Be creative or keep it simple. Whatever you do, please make a donation to an ALS charity and remember to have fun! We officially challenge YOU to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, this August and #everyAugustuntilacure.

Suwanee, GA, August 11, 2014– Terance Mathis, former All-American and Pro Bowl wide receiver for the Atlanta Falcons is partnering once again with Cure for ALS to host his 2nd annual Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday, September 15, 2014. The title sponsor for the event which will take place at the Alpharetta Athletic Club in Alpharetta, GA, is ChoicesToYou.com.

“As I have become more involved in the past couple of years with this cause, I realize that nobody is immune to getting ALS. It literally can strike anyone, and the fact that so many professional athletes have been diagnosed really has hit home with me,” says Mathis. “I know that it could be me fighting this disease.”

ALS is a neuromuscular disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord. There is no cure and the average life span after diagnosis is 2-5 years. It takes away the ability to move, speak, swallow, and ultimately breathe, and it can strike anyone.

The funds raised from the tournament will benefit the Emory ALS Center. Located in Atlanta, the Emory ALS Center is one of the largest clinical centers for ALS in the United States. The Center provides true multidisciplinary care for patients and families with ALS, and is dedicated to performing groundbreaking research in the laboratory to discover treatments and a cure.

Golfers in threesomes will be paired with celebrity team captains. Joining Terance Mathis as celebrity captains are Atlanta Falcons favorites Jesse Tuggle, Ruffin Hamilton, Michael Haynes, Gerald Riggs, Jamal Anderson, Chris Mohr, and Keith Brooking. Other football greats playing are Greg Lloyd, DJ Shockley, Nate Wayne, Brian Jordan, and Carl Pickens. Stars from the MLB playing in the tournament are Kenny Lofton and Fred McGriff.

Registration/player check-in begins at 8:30am for the scramble format tournament. 10:00am is the shotgun start, lunch will be provided, and there will be fun contests on the course. An awards reception will follow the round, where prizes will be presented to contest winners and the Top 3 Teams.

Via CURE FOR ALS : Raise a Glass to Kick ALS’s Ass was a terrific party! Host Becky Kidd’s goal for the evening was to thank the Emory ALS Clinic team for their dedication to help her and others living with ALS manage the disease and appreciate every day. A crowd of 150 came out to the Famous Pub in Atlanta for the event. While fundraising wasn’t the main task of the evening, a raffle and donations resulted in nearly $4,000 being raised to benefit the Emory ALS Center.

Becky kicked off the evening by welcoming everyone and showing a thank you film that was a compilation of videos sent in by pALS (people with ALS) and friends. Comedian, James Rodatus was up next and had everyone laughing for the next 25 minutes. Also living with ALS, James quickly made all comfortable with realizing that humor plays a big part in life – even when life is hard. He is like many others I see living with ALS who keep a positive attitude and live life to the fullest each and every day.

When James completed his act, local band Secret Sauce took the stage for the first of three music sets. It didn’t take long for the dance floor to become full as the happy crowd got into the music from the 80’s, 90’s and today. Between sets, Dr. Jonathan Glass, Director of the Emory ALS Center, and Dr. Christina Fournier, Emory ALS Center Neurologist, drew the raffle winners and received well-deserved raised glass toasts from the attendees.

Becky shares, “We call ourselves team 5 Smooth Stones for the story of David & Goliath.  I met my Goliath when I was diagnosed with ALS in January 2012.   ALS is a part of my life, but I refuse to allow it become my life. Every day for all of us is a gift, an honor and opportunity to live with joy...ALS does not have to change that. We will live with Courage, Confidence, Preparation and Trust until Victory has been achieved."

Good friends of Becky’s are riding as Team 5 Smooth Stones in the Snake Gap Time Trials. The Snake Gap Time Trials is a time trial series event along the Pinhoti Trail through National Forest Lands in Dalton, GA. It takes place on January 3, February 3, and March 7, 2015. Team 5 Smooth Stones has been fundraising during the series in honor of Becky. With one more ride left in the series they are half way to their goal of raising $5,000 for the Emory ALS Center. If you would like to help them reach their goal, you can make a donation at www.crowdrise.com/5smoothstones. ;

Hamilton, August 11, 2014 The 5th Annual Run for Jeremy 5K Run/Walk & 1 Mile Fun Run takes place Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Harris County High School in Hamilton, GA. Run for Jeremy is a 5k race that was started in 2010 in honor of Jeremy Williams, former football coach of Greenville High School. The event has raised more than $45,000 for the Emory ALS Center. Friends of the Williams family are the organizers of this event that brings out the entire community. Runners from all over Georgia, others from Alabama, pay tribute to Jeremy and others who are living with or have lost their lives to ALS.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, can strike anyone and is universally fatal. It slowly takes away the ability to move, speak, swallow, and ultimately breathe. The average life span after diagnosis is 2 to 5 years.

Jeremy Williams, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2008. During his years playing football, Jeremy Williams was known as the “Georgia Assassin” and this community event unites Coach Williams’ supporters to “Assassinate Lou Gehrig’s one Step at a time.” Proceeds from the event benefit the Emory ALS Center in Atlanta, GA, where Jeremy receives his care. Led by Dr. Jonathan Glass, the Emory ALS Center is one of the largest clinical centers for ALS in the United States. The Center provides true multidisciplinary care for patients and families with ALS and related disorders. The team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses, therapists, and dieticians care for both the physical and emotional needs of our patients and their families. The focus of the patient model is on independence and quality of life through state-of-the-art intervention.

Race morning will begin with the 1 Mile Fun Run on the track and starting at 8:30am. The 5k race will follow, starting at 9:00am. Each participant will receive a t-shirt and great post-race food, entertainment, and family fun. Online registration, and all event information is available at www.runforjeremy.com
