Video: Brazil’s Big Box Empire

Video: Brazil’s Big Box Empire | Als Return to Education | Scoop.it
Havan is a booming Brazilian retailer that borrows American icons like the White House and the Statue of Liberty to foster a growing consumer culture. Not everyone is impressed.
Al Picozzi's insight:

Seems globalism is in Brazil.  Havan is a big box retailer much like Best Buy, WalMart and Staples.  Much closer to a WalMart from what I've seen as they carry many different items.  A lot of the locals do no like the way it presents itself.  Using American symbols, especailly a 100 foot replica of the Statue of Liberty outside every store, upsets some of the people.  Some feel it is captialism and one women in the story evey states it is a misrepresentation of an important symbol, whcih I agree.  Can you imagine WalMart doing that???  Even their advertisments show typical American families, and even play New York, New York by Sinatra at their grand openings.  The owner and CEo ever thats they Havan is bringing "the American dream" to Brazil.  i have worked for big box retail.  It looks just the same as any store in the US right down to the morning "rally meetings."  Some people like the idea, some however feel it is hurting their culture.  Hmm exporting the American dream through big box retail...is that a good idea?????

A Rhode Island School for Wayward Boys Is Itself Reformed

A Rhode Island School for Wayward Boys Is Itself Reformed | Als Return to Education | Scoop.it
The remains of the Sockanosset Training School for Boys in Cranston, R.I., are now the base of a development with retail, residential and commercial space.
Al Picozzi's insight:

An article from back in 2009.  Showing how Cranston was revitalizing the Sockanosset area.  These buildings were "the bad boys school" as I was told when I was growing up.  You can see the original chapel that was kept in the picture above.  The area in now complete and called Chapel Hill.  The dorms were incorporated into the new buildings to keep some of the old architecture.  There is no real downtown in Cranston.  Everytime someone says downtown one thinks of Providence.  Is this an attempt to make a downtown area in Cranston?  I do not htink so, it is an extension of the olf Garden City Shopping Center, that downtown feeling is missing to me.  However it was an attempt to revitalize the area after a number of businesses closed in Garden City.  Did it work?  Seems to be working as the area has attracted new businesses and resturants and construction is still going on!

US shale oil threatens to derail OPEC's future

US shale oil threatens to derail OPEC's future | Als Return to Education | Scoop.it
The rise of North American oil supplies could test the future of OPEC which may have to curb supply to accommodate rising shale oil volumes, a new report has found.
Al Picozzi's insight:

The rise of the US in producing oil, especailly shale oil,  coupled with the difficulties of OPEC countries in actually producing the oil my lead to lower demand for foregin oil in the US.  From someone who remembers the gas lines of the 70s this is a great development.  It also can mean new jobs in a new industry.  Question is how long can this resource last, and what are the evironmental impacts of this new technology?

Detroit Bankruptcy a “Game-Changing Event,” Meredith Whitney Says

Detroit Bankruptcy a “Game-Changing Event,” Meredith Whitney Says | Als Return to Education | Scoop.it
It’s been just over a week since Detroit filed for the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history and, so far, there are more questions than answers about how this will all shake out. On Wednesday, a U.S.
Al Picozzi's insight:

Amazing to seee what has happened in Detroit.  Watch the video how she states all that left is a welfare state that pays no taxes.  Also will this lead other large metropolitan area to follw their lead?  Is this the beginning of the end for many cities or will this serve as a wake up to get all parties, city-governments and unions and pension holders and others to work together???
