Content curation is in the DNA of all journalists

Content curation is in the DNA of all journalists | Allicansee | Scoop.it
Journalists have been curating content for years. It’s always been an integral part of newsgathering. We may not have called it curation, but we were doing it all the same. In fact curation is an essential part of our job.

Interesting reflexions from Dave Brewer on how new technology has not created curation but changed the way you could perform it in a News Reporting and Journalism environment.

While there's clearly an opportunity at democratizing media creation and make it available to all through the new social media revolution, it's refreshing to see journalists also embrace these changes and turn them into benefits to improve the way they work.

Where To Find Free Images: Free Stock Photo Sites

Where To Find Free Images: Free Stock Photo Sites | Allicansee | Scoop.it

Getting images for free is great, and there is a lot of choice out there, but sourcing images from a free site can have its drawbacks, the license that the images are provided with is different on every site you use. Some sites prohibit commercial use of the image, most require an attribution, some require you register or signup to a newsletter to access the images, some ask that you seek permission first etc.

A word of warning: Expecting that nobody will notice if you make use of an image that you just take without permission is foolish, tools like TinEye make it free and easy to find who has used an image without permission, and stock agencies like getty and others use paid services like picscout.com track image misuse, bill the offender, taking legal action if images are not removed. If you are using images without the correct license, someone will catch up with you sooner or later. here's a typical forum quote "I currently have a demand from getty images for $1200 over an image I hot-linked to in a blog entry 2 years ago."

With that in mind, here's our definitive list of resources providing free stock photos with a table of comparisons:...

Copyright and remix culture: The new Prohibition?

Copyright and remix culture: The new Prohibition? | Allicansee | Scoop.it

As Mathew Ingram introduces: "The principle behind copyright has been taking a beating from "remix culture," driven in large part by YouTube and other video sites."

There are a number of creative activities you can put in that "remix culture" and though curation is not a challenge to current copyright law as it doesn't change the nature of the original content, it is probably part of its broader definition.

What's interesting is that the first challenge to copyright was piracy. But the remix culture has nothing to do with the motivation to get content for free: it is about creating the new from the existing, just like DJ's remix and sample songs to create new pieces.

Interesting to watch how this wave will shape the future of publishing.

Write, Get Feedback and Publish Your Book Online: Pandamian

Write, Get Feedback and Publish Your Book Online: Pandamian | Allicansee | Scoop.it

Pandamian is a new free service which makes it extremely easy to write, review and discuss, and publish a book online.

The service allows anyone who has registered for the service, to get feedback, discuss and review with others his writing work in progress, and to build a "community" around a book.

Pandamian fully and freely supports text conversion to EPUB, mobi, or PDF file formats.

The guys behind Pandamian (mostly from Singapore) are doing this because they believe "writers are the new publishers" and because they want to position themselves as the "Tumblr for book writers".

Find out more: http://www.pandamian.com/

See a video introduction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qhMd3og4WW0

P.S.: Thanks to Francesco Guglielmin for signalling this great resource

Creation, Curation, Ethics of Content Strategy (by Margot Bloomstein)

Those of us who saw Margot Bloomstein at SxSW 11 really liked her presentation : her talk was very subtle and precise as she went out to analyze and define what the key core aspects of curation were.

This is an update which is worth browsing as well (even if you saw the first one): this really is very interesting to those of us who try to come out with the best ways to evangelize curation best practices (just like we recently did at Scoop.it by being the first curation platform out there to introduce a score).

What she articulates really well is how ethics constraints and efficiency goals are nicely articulated when it comes to content publishing: it all resolves around the value-add you bring.

As I've said before, one of the very first step one can take in that direction is to be focusing on a given topic. We've observed that many times now by seeing some curators emerge with strong trafic in spite of relatively small social media presence. It never stops to surprise us but it also feels good: adding-value, focused curators are being rewarded over time.

So she really makes a strong point aroung the importance of bringing back meaning in the game: that's what curation is and should be about.

Thanks Robin: good article as well and yes, good point on attribution being key.
Robin Good's comment, October 31, 2011 12:49 PM
Thank you Guillaume for your positive feedback!

Consider for example that if you curate something and then another curator republishes it. All fine. You get credit. But then if a second and third curator do the same, the credit gets lost unless they do something manually.

This is just a consideration on which to think, as the attribution and credit element will gain strength in the coming months.

Scoring: that's another weak point. I have looked closely at the scores Scoop.it gives out and I remain very perplexed of how certain low-quality channels can get such high scores. Something not right in there as well that needs looking into.

:-) Keep it up!
