Google+: 'Tis the Season for Shipping

Google+: 'Tis the Season for Shipping | AllAboutSocialMedia | Scoop.it
Laurie DesAutels's insight:

While it was tempting to give away one Google+ gift a day for the rest of the month, we thought it'd be more practical to wrap everything together in one holiday package.

This #seasonforshipping we’ve tried to think of a gift for everyone. Whether you’re an Android addict, a budding broadcaster, or the resident party planner, there’s a feature for each of you in our last big launch of the year: 18 treats to make sharing and communicating easier and more fun than ever.

Giving you the best mobile and photo experiences

From the start, the Google+ team has been committed to building an industry-leading mobile experience. Today we’re adding a new batch of Android features, including on-the-go profile editing, an easier way to author content, and a subtle notice when there's new stuff to read. You can also subscribe to mobile notifications from your favorite circles and interact with Google+ Communities on your phone or tablet.

We’re especially excited about our photo improvements—a core part of Google+, and one which you’ve consistently told us means a lot to you.

On Android, we're now offering full-size backups of your photos (up to 5GB free), in addition to the standard-size option (unlimited free storage at 2048px). To give it a try, simply turn on Instant Upload and start taking pictures: photos you shoot will be saved to a private album on Google+.

We're also bringing photo spheres to the mobile stream. You'll need Android 4.2 to create these 360-degree panoramas, but any Froyo-or-later user can now enjoy them.

New Social Content Discovery Tool: Hopflow

New Social Content Discovery Tool: Hopflow | AllAboutSocialMedia | Scoop.it

Giuseppe Mauriello: Hopflow is web and iOS social content discovery app which seeks to connect users with a stream of content based on their personal interests. It is similar to other services like Prismatic and Trapit.

From reviewed article by The Next Web:

"Hopflow lets users Discover and share content through following specific topics rather than individual sources, and based on these interests, a personalized flow of stories from around the Web is reeled in.

You’ll need to sign up with your Twitter or Facebook credentials.

Hopflow scanned my Twitter history and, quite accurately, told me all the subjects I am indeed interested in.

You can, of course, manually select and deselect options as you see fit, and once you click ‘Done’, you’ll have a long stream of news stories based around your topics of interest. It’s like Twitter, except you follow topics rather than accounts, and this comparison is given further credence with the ‘Rehop’ feature which lets you share your news with others.

“The social Web is full of content platforms that force people to manually follow and filter through sources and information,” says Erez Pilosof, CEO and Founder of Hopflow. ” In this contextual age, people want tools that are simple and provide targeted information. We believe that discovering and sharing stories about the things that interest you shouldn’t be tedious and time consuming but rather fun and easy. Hopflow eliminates unwanted noise and allows users to sit back and enjoy a beautiful image-based ‘flow’ of relevant content outside of their current social networks.”

How a fake press release made everyone think Google was buying ICOA | memeburn

How a fake press release made everyone think Google was buying ICOA | memeburn | AllAboutSocialMedia | Scoop.it

If you were flitting around a few tech blogs yesterday, you may have read a story about Google’s planned acquisition of a wireless network provider called ICOA. The articles were based on a press release from a service called PRWeb, which said that Google would be shelling out some US$400-million for the service, which provides public areas in the US with wireless hotspots, in a bid to “further diversify its already impressive portfolio of companies”.
The thing is, the press release wasn’t true....

Official Google Blog: Chromebooks for classrooms: $99 for the holidays

Official Google Blog: Chromebooks for classrooms: $99 for the holidays | AllAboutSocialMedia | Scoop.it

For many students and teachers, the hassles of traditional computing often prevent them from making the most of technology in the classroom. Schools that have adopted Chromebooks, however, have been able to bring the web’s vast educational resources—whether it’s conducting real-time research or collaborating on group projects—right into the classroom. Chromebooks are fast, easily sharable, and require almost no maintenance. Today more than 1,000 schools have adopted Chromebooks in classrooms, including some school districts like Richland School District Two (S.C.), Leyden High School District (Ill.), and Council Bluffs Community School District (Iowa) who have deployed Chromebooks to tens of thousands of students.

To help budget-strapped classrooms across the country, we’re working with DonorsChoose.org, an online charity that connects donors directly to public school classroom needs. For the holiday season, teachers can request the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook—the most widely deployed Chromebook in schools—at a special, discounted price of $99 including hardware, management and support.

If you’re a full-time public school teacher in the U.S., visit DonorsChoose.org and follow the instructions to take advantage of this opportunity by December 21, 2012. Your request will be posted on DonorsChoose.org where anyone can make a donation to support your classroom. When you reach your funding goal, you’ll receive your Chromebooks from Lakeshore Learning, DonorsChoose.org’s exclusive fulfillment partner for this program.

If you’re not a teacher, please share this opportunity with the teachers who have made a difference in your life! Or if you’re interested in supporting a classroom directly, read through the list of Chromebook projects and donate what you can. Be sure to check back often for new projects.

Thank you for your support in giving the gift of hassle-free technology to teachers and students. Working together, we can ensure “The virus ate my homework” is never uttered in a classroom again, and we can help classrooms get off to a strong start in the New Year!

Happy holidays.
