Parrots, illegally imported to Belarus in February, first escaped destruction by veterinarians and then flew away. On April 25, the Economic Court of the Brest region drew to administrative responsibility a Baranavichy resident, who on February 9 illegally imported into the country 441 exotic parrots costing 116 million Br. The birds had no papers, and border guards handed them to the Lelchytsy veterinary services and started checking the parrots’ carrier. Later the bird smuggler was given the birds for safekeeping.

Researchers from the Schubot Exotic Bird Health Center at Texas A&M University, are researching how video games can help with a parrot’s health. The project began with an Undergraduate Research Scholars project mentored by graduate student Constance Woodman and run by senior Taylor Strange in 2014.

North Maluku Water Police (NMWP) arrested four citizens of the Phillippines for a smuggling attempt of 212 endemic birds on May 9, 2016. Among the smuggled birds were 150 Eclectus Parrots (Eclectus roratus), 53 White Cockatoos (Cacatua alba), 3 Chattering Lories (Lorius garrulus) , and 1 Lorikeet. Some of the birds were dead upon the seizure, including 3 White Cockatoos, 1 Eclectus Parrot, and 1 Chattering Lory. The Phillippines has been a major smuggling destination of birds from Sulawesi and North Maluku. In the Phillippines, the birds will be sold in local markets and also exported to other countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Middle East:

TWO critically endangered orange-bellied parrots have been spotted near Werribee.

Two critically endangered Orange-bellied parrots have been spotted near Werribee, outside of Melbourne, Australia. With fewer than 70 birds left in the wild, the find is a naturalist’s needle in a haystack. The two males were captured tucking in to some foliage on April 19 and are believed to be the first of the birds to have safely made the crossing from their breeding grounds in Tasmania. One of the birds is a return visitor to the site, having spent the past four winters there. Now BirdLife Australia is looking for its feathered friends and hopes volunteers will get on board for the survey count on 21-22 May. Orange-bellied parrots mainland count co-ordinator Chris Purnell said last spring 23 birds returned to the species’ only known breeding area in Tasmania’s south-west:
