Mobile + Social = Mocial ( 3 key takeaways )

Mobile + Social = Mocial ( 3 key takeaways ) | Social Media Magazine(SMM): Social Media Content Curation & Marketing Strategies | Scoop.it

Mobile Drives Adoption of Social Media in 2013

If a company wants to connect at a faster pace with its customers in social forums, it should build a mobile engagement and content strategy to reach them at a faster clip.

In a recent study released by Nielsen, consumers now spend around 20% of their total time online using social networks via their personal computers and 30% of their time online visiting social networks on mobile. In addition, time spent on social media in the U.S. across both platforms grew 37% to reach 121 billion minutes in July 2012, up from 88 billion minutes in July 2011.

Mobile devices are aiding in growing these numbers, with consumers’ time spent using social media mobile apps and mobile websites accounting for 63% of the year-over-year growth.

Forty-six percent of social media users say they use their smartphones to access social media, and 16% say they use social media on a tablet.

This makes the need for all social campaigns to think “mobile first” in order to capture this growing dynamic.

Here are three key takeaways for adopting Mocial

11 Whooping Social Media Myths and Lies.

11 Whooping Social Media Myths and Lies. | Social Media Magazine(SMM): Social Media Content Curation & Marketing Strategies | Scoop.it

One of the great big whopping lies about social media is authenticity.

•Because – let’s face it – there isn’t much that’s authentic about social media. There’s lots of spin, cherry-picking, and bright-side propaganda from both individuals and brands going on. Few people and brands are truly genuine about their attitudes, personalities and opinions on social channels

.

Why?

•Because few people are authentic when they are being watched. When you are being scrutinized you put your best face forward. It’s only natural. And for brands social channels are for marketing and communications. In other words, “planned” content. Planned content, by its nature, is not authentic.

so let us count and debunk some of the most popular myths about social media authenticity:

••➨ 1 Myth : Consumers demand that brands be authentic on social media

•Reality: Consumers want brands to fit within their perception of what the brand stands for. What people really mean by saying they want brands to be “authentic” is that they want brands to be on message. To reflect their brand. If the brand strays outside of the boundaries of that perception – they are routinely punished for it.

•Take last year, for example, when the American Rifleman magazine published a tweet that read in part “Good morning, shooters” right after the Aurora, Colorado mass shooting.  American Rifleman - which is a magazine for, well, shooters – was savaged for it. Its tweet, while badly timed, was most definitely authentic. In the storm that followed the publication deleted not only the tweet, but also its entire Twitter account. Why?  It’s too risky being authentic when it means supporting guns and bullets.

•A second example is Chik-Fil-A. It is a brand that is authentically conservative Christian. That philosophy is built into the brands DNA (the restaurants are closed on Sundays as a result). Chick-Fil-A found itself out of the frying pan and into the fire last year for speaking out against gay marriage. It’s a stance that’s about as authentic as you get, but no one was celebrating that fact.  Chick-Fil-A’s opinions led to boycotts and people demanding that Chik-Fil-A keep its authentic opinions to itself.

••➨ 2 Myth : People are authentic on social media

•Reality: People lie like crazy on social media.  And if they aren’t outright lying they are certainly painting their lives in the most wonderful light. Facebook has turned us all into our own private publicists. That’s why restaurant and vacation photographs are so popular – look at me doing awesome things!  Few people write about the daily drudgery of their lives or the challenges of being married or a parent. A recent survey about women and dishonesty on social networks was very revealing.

•Here’s what the Telegraph noted in its story on the survey:

“According to the OnePoll survey, one-third of women surveyed admitted to “dishonesty” on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter at some stage.  Almost one in four admitted to lying or exaggerating about key aspects of their life online between one and three times a month while almost one in 10 said they lied more than once a week.”

•I think it is safe to say men would likely rank about the same. Don’t we all what our lives to appear more glamorous or important to our friends, family and colleagues?

••➨ 3 Myth : Brand authenticity is appreciated and rewarded on social media

•Reality: Not even close. Do you want to know what is really authentic? Mistakes. We all make them. But if you’re a brand and you make a mistake on social media? Then you get a kick to the head for it – even if you retract it and apologize.

•Look what happened when American Apparel tweeted out information about a sale they were having just before a big storm – just in case people got “bored” riding it out.  The storm, unfortunately, was Hurricane Sandy.

•Hundreds, if not thousands of people turned on American Apparel on social channels to rip them about their tweet – even though it was written before the storm struck.

•Or how about Kenneth Cole’s tweet linking the riots in Cairo with a sale of his shoes? He was hammered for this error in judgement even after apologizing for it.

••➨ 4 Myth: Authenticity humanizes brands and that behavior is rewarded

•Reality: Human beings don’t run the social media channels at brands. Groups of people do. And those groups are usually PR and marketing experts and all they are trying to do is sell things: messages, brand identity and products and services. Brands are a lot of things, but human isn’t one of them.

•But that doesn’t stop “human emotions” from occasionally making its way onto brand social channels. And when that happens? Trouble. Nestle is a perfect example of this. When its Facebook page was attacked by Greenpeace activists angry about the brand’s use of palm oil and its connection to destroying rain forests, the flustered community manager at Nestle reacted in a most human way: he become frustrated.

•And when he vented this frustration through a few snarky remarks about the rudeness of the activists, he was, of course, roundly and loudly denounced and criticized for reacting like, well, a human being.

There are lots of benefits to building a community around your company, but if I had to choose a few, here are my top five:
1. It will help you weather Google’s algorithms;
2. It will add equity and value to your business;
3. It will help you have purpose;
4. It will help you stand out;

Social Media Curation Guide | SEOmoz

Social Media Curation Guide | SEOmoz | Social Media Magazine(SMM): Social Media Content Curation & Marketing Strategies | Scoop.it

Here is an excerpt from this long and interesting article:

" Last year on SEOmoz, I published "The Content Curation Guide for SEO", which - even though it is still valid - I thought it needed a fresh addition.

useful to SEOs and Content Marketers who must deal with more duties than just curation: social media curation.

why it is important to include social content curation in your inbound marketing strategy; how to prepare, organize, execute, and analyze your social curation activities; and what tools to use.
...
Automation, which is not the same as scheduling, takes away the human touch of a real and thoughtful human social curation, which - with the quality of the content shared - is what makes the difference.
...
Why social content curation?

Content curation, as a facet of content marketing, can be of help in making that objective true.
...
How can I find trusted sources of information to curate?
...
As I have said since the beginning, social content curation should be meant as a content marketing tactic to help you and your brand become a trusted source of information, and eventually a thoughtful leader, in your niche.

Social content curation can result in future occasions for link building, social shares of your own original content, or even collaborations."

The article is very long and informative.

There are some good recommendations in the article, and it includes one of my favorite Clay Shirky quotes:

"It's not information overload. It's filter failure," Clay Shirky once said. And filter failure happens if you are not able to organize the sources you have collected for performing you social content curation activity.

It has become clear that social media is turning into quite the process. It’s becoming more and more important, so many different tools and advice columns keep popping up to help businesses and individuals stay organized and successful when it comes to this newer marketing effort. This has caused many companies to create a full-time social media position for experts to help manage the many social accounts, follow analytics, get creative with engagement, etc. It takes a lot of time and effort, but the payoff is only increasing as social involvement increase.

"By definition, content curation is the act of continually identifying, organizing, and sharing the best and most relevant content on a specific topic or issue online.  When evaluating which content curation tool to use, there are three primary areas of consideration:

1.The Inputs – Where does the content curation tool get information from? What type of content will this allow me to curate?  Will it help identify and recommend relevant content?

2.The Organization  – What does this tool offer in terms of organizing content once it has been identified?  What type of data models does this represent content as? In a simple chronological list, or an inter-linked structure? Does it let me annotate and editorialize the curated content?

3.The Venue – How and where can I share the content once I have decided to curate it?

Search engine optimization has not been dependent on a minimal number of factors for a long time now, such as number of times a keyword appeared on a page, and it continues to become a more complex web of on and off-page factors every month. Venkatesh - if I am able I give my site as much media support as I can. As a social media trainer I need to 'try out' media before I can teach others to use it and give an insight into which is useful and which is not. So I tend to put my site and what I am doing out on the various social media platforms at least twice a day - I don't over emphasise my site because that can be counter productive (people switch off if all they see from you is self-promotion) and so it is keeping your presence alive but not switching off potential clients by constant ME, ME, ME. I perform both SEO services and social media training for others (see - just a bit of self promotion LOL)

This infographic is a great way to depict many of the articles I've previously pointed out that cover SEO and social media. It is almost easier to explain the relationship in an image format, especially for those who don't have a background in SEO.

There are many other factors that go into how much social media truly affects SEO, so there is more to be explained after this. But this is a great introductory image. It also emphasizes the speed with which social media makes an impact.

WordPress Content Curation - How I Do It ? | Social Media Magazine(SMM): Social Media Content Curation & Marketing Strategies | Scoop.it
Curating Content for a WordPress Blog (How I Do It)
AndySernovitz's insight:

I can see the reasons for doing this to sift through a vast number of information sources to compile useful articles in one place… I could do with something similar as I find it hard to sift through all of mine each day and can miss some great resources.

Again having the resource available online for all is positive again… However the mass amounts of what would be duplicate content on site would have a very negative effect on the site’s SEO.

The ideal solution you would want is the WordPress site to trawl the specified source feeds, determine what articles are relevant by keywords specified etc. and then spin those articles so that they are unique…

but obviously its a very tall order as spinning content takes a large amount of setup and input per article and can be frowned upon anyway as an SEO / content creation method.

Collect, Curate, Communicate: The 3 C's Of Content Curation

Collect, Curate, Communicate: The 3 C's Of Content Curation | Social Media Magazine(SMM): Social Media Content Curation & Marketing Strategies | Scoop.it

1. Collect:
The content curator’s work is never done. Minutes after perusing your RSS reader 20 more articles have been posted and the cycle starts again. In the mainstream news era, the national news came on at precisely the same time every night.

2. Curate:
- Consistent Subject Matter – Because the information flow is swift and always moving, content curators must be consistent with their niche and resist the temptation to follow whims. Define the topics that you are going to cover.
- Direct Communication – Social media has no appreciation for nuance, so as a curator, be direct.
- Filter Consistently – As news editors filtered the news that was worthy of their readership, think about what is relevant to your readership. Filter out the stories that are redundant, irrelevant or boring.

3. Communicate:
- Be human - Bring your voice to your content. Be real.
- Be frequent not a freak when you overpublish..."

Actually Anthony I would. I have a pdf of this infographic and would use it to help any client through the web design process. I do have a proper 'pre-flight' checklist that I go through so that I am clear on what they actually want from their site and can incorporate any special requirements into the design process. It also helps clients know what they REALLY want - because many have a vague idea of what they want from a site - or far-flung ideas about design that work on paper but don't necessarily work on the internet. So using this infographic alongside a website 'plan' would help with the process I believe.
