Stop wasting billions of dollars using the wrong software languages

Stop wasting billions of dollars using the wrong software languages | All Things Functional | Scoop.it

aelena's insight:

Software drives the innovation economy, but there is a big elephant in the room. Billions of dollars are wasted due to excess project failures, bug fixes, and maintenance that prevents ROI from being realized.  The article mentionst that surveys and studies have consistently shown that 50 to 75 percent of software projects are consumed by bug fixes and maintenance (it would have been nice to show some links there, although my experience leads me to more or less believe in similar percentages). Agile, Scrum, etc are not perfect solution, Haskell is, according to the article.

Think Functionally to Simplify Code - Programming - O'Reilly Media

Think Functionally to Simplify Code - Programming - O'Reilly Media | All Things Functional | Scoop.it
Functional programming keeps growing. While it has long been a popular topic in academic circles, and many of my CS-educated friends wonder why it took me so long to...
aelena's insight:

even for those of us working mostly with non functional paradigms, languages and tools, the quality, maintainability and readability of our code will always benefit greatly from adopting a more functional style of programming. The most popular languages, such as Java or C#, have already adopted many of the tenets proposed and introduced by pioneering languages decades ago (both functional, such as lambdas, immutable structures, and nonfunctional, such as garbage collection, introduced already by Lisp). That means we can adopt newer styles in our coding. Try to use immutable data structures, to design with as few side effects as possible, make judicious use of anonymous functions, work with lists and list comprenhensions, not everything in life is a for loop!!
