FileMaker 14 Platform and OS X El Capitan Answer ID: 15187Products FileMaker Pro
14.x FileMaker Pro Advanced 14.x FileMaker Server 14.x FileMaker, Inc. is planning to release updates to address compatibility issues with OS X El Capitan as well as other general bug fixes. FileMaker, recommends that you wait for these updates before using FileMaker with OS X El Capitan.
Earlier this week, I was speaking with a friend who is in the process of going out on his own as a FileMaker consultant. He wanted to “pick my brain” about what’s involved, get some advice that I have based on my experience, and get answers to some of his questions. And while it feels a little strange to be writing about FileMaker again (especially considering that I no longer “do” FileMaker work myself), I thought I’d share some of our conversation - because I get asked these questions often, by both new and established consultants.
Importing records from one file to another is a great way to keep everything local on an iPad or an iPhone. I use this technique to process updates of our iOS Solutions.
When a user checks for updates, the Solution creates a local backup on the user’s device, and the new version imports the user’s data from the backup. This keeps the user’s data private and eliminates the need to sync single-user solutions with a hosted file.
I just figured this out and thought it was cool enough to share with you. It’s pretty commonplace to put a button over a FileMaker Pro portal row object to trigger an event related to that particular row.
But sometimes you don’t want a button across the entire row. So then we typically put a visual button off to the side like an “edit” button, but the result can be unsightly seeing “edit” repeated a dozen times on the screen.
So, what if you could just display the edit button when that row was active.
“I hate FileMaker!” Several years ago, these were the words I heard from a veteran developer. This is a true tale of corporate waste. We had implemented a great FileMaker project management solution that had been in use for years to track all the critical information associated with thousands of jobs in a large corporate IT …
This is Part 2 in a multi-part series about using the location functions in FileMaker Go. Where Am I? What’s Accuracy? Where’s My Stuff? How Far? Which Way? What’s Close? In my last post, I described the basics of using the Location and LocationValues functions in FileMaker Go. Now I want to focus on something that’s been …
It helps you call FileMaker scripts from a web viewer app and return data to the Web Viewer.
These solutions work across Mac, Windows, and iOS, on both hosted or local files. FileMaker 13.0v2 or later is required.
As FileMaker 14 was released, developers have a lot of new tools at their disposal. Since version 12 a lot of great improvements regarding the interface have been released. New objects such as popover-buttons or slide-controls, for example, but also the implementation of themes and styles create new opportunities.
The idea is actually rather simple. When woking in a context of a certain Table Occurence, use a global field in that table and link it with a unique ID in a table you want to modify transactionally. Every time the Global Field gets set to a value of existing ID in the related table, that record becomes available through the relation and can be modified. Then when the value in global foreign key is changed, another record is available for modifications.
We challenged ourselves to create a visual language for our users that synthesizes the classic principles of good design with the innovation and possibility of technology and science. This is material design. This spec is a living document that will be updated as we continue to develop the tenets and specifics of material design.
Apple will be releasing iOS 9 later today which will contain a whole bunch of new features. One of these new features will be multitasking for iPads. This is where the user can have two apps open at once; with the screen split into two parts.
Multitasking is one of the biggest new features for iPad that comes with iOS 9 and I’m sure it is going to make a lot of tasks a great deal easier. I can’t wait to begin using it; especially with FileMaker Go! The ability to have a clients e-mail open at the same time as generating an invoice or calculating an estimate is going to be immensely useful. Or will it?
Large relationship graphs in FileMaker can get difficult to navigate. You spend a lot of time scrolling around or zooming in and out to try and find the relevant area where you need to work. There are a couple of ways to deal with this problem. One way is to use the 2empowerFM FileMaker Developer …
