An “affordance” is a perceived signal or clue that an object may be used to perform a particular action. A chair sits at around knee height and appears to provide support. It affords sitting. A toothbrush has a handle a little longer than the human palm. It affords gripping.
As long as I can remember databases have had labels and field boxes, and that goes back to the days of Claris Works, FileMaker 2.1. and others as well, at least when the GUI started to take over. Even this blog post is typed into a scrolling field box. Field boxes have their place, but not in every place, the same goes for field labels. They have been handled so many ways, label to the left, flush left, flush right, top, in field, you get the picture. Both of them take up space and now with new tools there are so many ways we can use them less.
The Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases NHS Foundation Trust is expanding its use of iPad-based patient questionnaires, and looking at making them available to other trusts.
The trust has been piloting the digitised questionnaires, developed by Decent Group using the FileMaker platform, for patients completing a rheumatoid arthritis health assessment prior to their appointment.
Trust consultant rheumatologist Dr Raj Sengupta, who led the pilot, told EHI the trust is using the software to streamline the way it collects and uses the information.
The iPad-based questionnaire is completed by patients while they are waiting to see a consultant, with the data transferred via a wireless network and displayed on the clinician’s PC using a browser-based reporting tool.
FileMaker Pro 13 Tip-n-nTrick: Easy-Bake FileMaker Pro 13 Audit Trail By: Doug West There are many ways to implement audit logs in FileMaker Pro 13, but I'm always on the lookout for the method with the least overhead. If you don't need separate records in another table for every field change, then you can keep track of…
SeedCode just posted a cool example in which they “simulate a drawer effect in FileMaker where an animated slide panel appears to withdraw completely into the window edge”. Unfortunately, they mention...This made me think of Web Viewers since they always float on top of all other elements on a layout, and they doblock all interactions with any elements that lie beneath. Thinking this could be another use-case for our friend FMP URL, I whipped up a quick demo.
"A web-app interface for your FileMaker database" — Revisited, Released, Unlocked
With the release of FileMaker 13.0v2 came a huge boost to the usability of the FMP URL protocol - specifically that it can now be used in unhosted FileMaker Pro files.
A number of developers have put out examples* showing some cool things that can be done with Web Viewers and the FMP URL, so I figured this would be a good time to resurrect the file I made a year ago.
Please see Responsive FileMaker Design & Web-Viewer Layouts ( the trailer ) for more details, the inspiration, and a screencast video showing how to use the file, etc.
FileMaker 13 introduces a couple new functions, Base64Decode and Base64Encode. Base64 is a commonly used method of encoding binary data as text. For example, it is a standard means of attaching files to email. When you attach a file to an email to send to a friend, your email application can encode the raw file as text using Base64. When the email is received, the program you use to read email decodes the attachment in order for you to save it to your computer.
