Dr. Dea Conrad-Curry's curator insight, November 21, 2013 10:49 AM

What we must remember about text complexity and course rigor is that numbers do not tell the whole story. Lexile ranges are the not the only measure of text quality and instructional approaches to working with and through text are what will make easy reads rigorous. Likewise, high lexiled texts can be made more apprehendable to kids through the means by which teachers approach the text. There is more between the covers of a book than words alone. The words may be easy but the ideas are challenging; the words may be hard but the ideas may be easily grasped. Think about the langague of biology and science. Yes, some of the concepts are abstract, but the language of science is made more concrete through our interaction with the world of nature. We must have kids interacting with text: whether that text is written in a narrative genre or an informative genre.
