Against Acknowledgments at the End of Novels

Against Acknowledgments at the End of Novels | All Things Bookish | Scoop.it

"...the most irritating promotional addendum of all: the acknowledgments page."

A gratuitous supplement to the dedication page, acknowledgments can now be found at the conclusion of virtually every published novel, often running to as many as three pages and thanking scores of people.

The Australian airline has created what it believes are books of the perfect length and style for your flight. But how does it know how fast you read? Read this article by Chris Matyszczyk on CNET News.
Sara Rosett's insight:

"Qantas claims they are "bespoke." Tailored to the length of the flight. I suppose they could have serials for delayed flights....

Cover girls: this year's book jacket fashions

Cover girls: this year's book jacket fashions | All Things Bookish | Scoop.it

As the London Book Fair showcases this year's literary trends, we showcase the latest must-have looks...And what's not hot? On the way out are yellows and pastels; the curious short-lived vogue for showing only women's feet or arms; images of furniture; ostensibly hand-illustrated covers (eg The Art of Fielding) - and the retro look in general has become passe"

Sara Rosett's insight:

The woman running away cover is way overdone. At least these aren't in a red raincoat.

Book Discoverability: Creating A "Rotten Tomatoes" rating site for books - Forbes

Book Discoverability: Creating A "Rotten Tomatoes" rating site for books - Forbes | All Things Bookish | Scoop.it
With the glut of self-published books on the market, the biggest obstacle for authors is discoverability - to rise above the noise and clutter and distinguish one's work. A Rotten Tomatoes sort of rating system seems inevitable.
Sara Rosett's insight:

A book discovery/rating site like "Rotten Tomatoes" for books would be great, but they need to source more sites than those listed in this article. How many Indie book get reviewed by The Wall Street Journal and Wired.com? Goodreads and Amazon, anyone?

Amazon shares climb on Kindle e-book optimism

Amazon shares climb on Kindle e-book optimism | All Things Bookish | Scoop.it

We initially assumed that early adopters of eReader devices would be avid readers and, therefore, the marginal buyer would read less," Devitt wrote.

However, data from a recent Amazon presentation show that consumers who bought a Kindle in 2011 read 4.6 times more e-books, on average, in the 12 months following their gadget purchase, compared with the 12 months before getting the device, the analyst noted.

Sara Rosett's insight:

So perhaps the #book market isn't dead quite yet...

Amazon lands patent on marketplace for selling on used digital content | ZDNet

Amazon lands patent on marketplace for selling on used digital content | ZDNet | All Things Bookish | Scoop.it
Amazon has landed a patent for a second-hand digital market - a concept that has already attracted the ire of rights-holders elsewhere.
Sara Rosett's insight:

"Amazon's idea is that users can sacrifice their right to access "the now-used digital content" and move it to another person's data store.

In some ways, the patent merely describes a digital locker, but one that permits trade and imposes scarcity on the digital goods in order to address questions around the "first sale" doctrine — a legal principle that limits the rights of copyright and trademark owners and allows protected material to be resold."

Does Social Media Sell Books? FSB Associates Blog

Does Social Media Sell Books? FSB Associates Blog | All Things Bookish | Scoop.it

According to Publisher’s Weekly, the three biggest selling authors last year were E. L. James, Suzanne Collins & Gillian Flynn. Neither Suzanne Collins nor Gillian Flynn spend much time on social networking. So how important is it for sales? I decided to ask this question to someone who has had a front row seat to the success of Gillian Flynn as well as many other authors.

The following is an interview with Gillian Flynn’s literary agent Stephanie Rostan (Levine Greenberg)

Sara Rosett's insight:

Summary: Er, maybe. Maybe not. Sometimes. Hard to tell. :)

Judith van Praag's curator insight, March 29, 10:57 AM

Just the other day I read in a Dutch newspaper that Emile Zola sold 100s of thousands of books without ever giving an interview. This is true for many authors of fame who published in an era without either Social Media, or much competition. The snow of yesteryear.
Still, even now, writing the best book you can possibly write is the way to go. And even then, you may have to wait until you're in your 80s before you're really noticed. That's just how the cookie crumbles.

Future of Foyles: Shelving the Bookstore? | FutureBook

Future of Foyles: Shelving the Bookstore? | FutureBook | All Things Bookish | Scoop.it

The answer lies, I think, not in ‘groovifying’ Foyles (think “touchscreens everywhere, even on the walls outside the store”) – which is at most a finishing touch – but in the positive aspects of theexperience of buying a book that Amazon can’t capture. Foyles has something Amazon can never have: physical depth. It is much nicer to browse through a book collection you can see and touch.

Sara Rosett's insight:

B&N has tried the diversifying approach:  more stationery/gifts/nook store, less physical books. Doesn't seem to be working out for them...
