Work Smarter: Using Tech Tools to Promote Reading and Writing Workshops (EdSurge News)

Work Smarter: Using Tech Tools to Promote Reading and Writing Workshops (EdSurge News) | Latest Tech News | Scoop.it
To many educators, personalizing reading and writing instruction sounds like an impossible and, oftentimes, lofty dream. But with our culture’s ever-increasing dependency on text, especially as we transition to digital media, online reading, and electronic communication, it’s more important than eve

Paul France explains how it is important to keep teaching children to read and write with technology. The Reading and Writing work shop helps kids learn using different apps. Not all apps are useful to gain reading and writing skills and the most useful apps are iCardsort and Popplet. An app that caught my attention mentioned by Paul France was Educreations and this app helps kids read words and spell them by highlighting and speaking them. This app in my opinion should be taught in schools that now are providing ebooks. This workshop is the future because kids are able to take reading and writing in another level by using google tools. Google tools allows the teachers to make data collection documents to help teach students easier and fastert. This article is a reliable source because ed Surge is a website where Certified Educators provide great advice.

(READING & WRITING 9/8)

The title of this article explains exactly what it is about. Many people presently shun the usage of technology in younger generations because solely, its not what "they" are used to; our parents did not grow up with iPads but with the idea of an Apple Computer. To begin, I deemed this article valid because the website that published this opinion piece is a notorious blog-ish type website used by many elementary school teachers and school administrators all over the world. The author, Paul France, is a certified National Board Educator and reading specialist at a school in San Francisco. I admire how this article is finally an optimistic and innovative view towards the topic of youth and technology; explaining the process of how and why. Instead of bashing the new technological generations, France documents 3 Apps now offered that utilize educational tactics that help younger children understand that importance of reading and writing; somewhat getting younger children more engaged and excited toward the topic. Personally concluded, technology is the face of our future and it is time we start embracing what we have access to rather then continue to complain about something that won't change.

Madison Totushek's curator insight, October 13, 2015 4:54 PM

Technology has been evolving over the last two decades and is not being used frequently as a learning tool in many classrooms. This can be a good thing when students are being exposed to it at a young age, but harmful if they are just learning how to use the most simple things on the computer. In this article. one teacher describes how he uses Google Forms to help students with reading and writing. It also brings up some other non-Google Drive apps early on and the Google Forms ideas are near the end of the article. Many studies conducted in the past have shown that using technology to learn can actually not be as beneficial as many think. The old pen and paper to take notes actually is more beneficial because it requires more of your brain to work and make connections with each other.

Richard Byrne updates his information on creating quizzes by sharing the steps to inserting a video into Google Forms. He states that this will work for people using a personal gmail address but not a Google Apps for Ed account.
He shares a number of screen shots that walk you through the process and briefly discusses the other three new features.

Google forms provide a way for you to collect data on your students and use it as a form of assessment to help improve your teaching, one of the requirements of Common Core.

Amélie Silvert's curator insight, September 10, 2013 11:10 AM

After adding an image, we can at last insert a video.

A feature useful for flipped classroom and of course class use.

What wonderful news!
