Edcamp STEAM: How To Outfit The Ideal Elementary School Maker Studio

Edcamp STEAM: How To Outfit The Ideal Elementary School Maker Studio | Makerspace R Us | Scoop.it

The Makerspace Maker Studio at Trace Crossings Elementary School, Hoover, AL

STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) is an educational initiative to incorporate more art into STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Art can be added to STEM with traditional arts, with design principles, or with creative solutions to problem solving. STEAM fits in well with other subjects and learning methods such as project-based learning, teaching coding and robotics, or game based learning.

Earlier this month, Drawp was invited to attend and present to EdCamp STEAM in Hoover, Alabama at Trace Crossings Elementary School. Assistant Principal Amanda Stone and STEAM Facilitator Dana Joyner, along with dozens of volunteers, did an amazing job organizing the event for a great group of teachers interested in teaching, sharing, and learning about how to incorporate STEAM into their curricula.

Teachers attended sessions about robotics, Ozobots, Drawp for School, Lego, Scratch, science standards, project-based learning and more. Teachers were allowed to play freely in the makerspace playground creating with cardboard, Legos, and robots.

Rigamajig wall

Best of all, teachers received a tour of Trace Crossings Elementary School’s amazing new STEAM Maker Studio, a dedicated STEAM education classroom with stations for designing, constructing, and giving feedback on student creations. The classroom includes a wall-sized whiteboard for planning ideas, a retro video game corner, and enough robots to keep a gaggle of 1st graders innovating for days.

Even the youngest kindergartener can learn to build complex machines in the Maker Studio. My favorite discovery was Rigamajig, a wonderful low-tech wooden construction set that comes with pre-cut wooden panels, rivets, and pulleys.

Below are some of our favorite robots, products, and resources we like for STEAM makerspaces. You can find the full list with images and summaries on List.ly.

3D Printable STEM Projects For Makerspaces | Makerspaces.com

3D Printable STEM Projects For Makerspaces | Makerspaces.com | Makerspace R Us | Scoop.it
At the beginning of March, we will be launching a new site called 3DPrintables.com which will feature 3D printable STEM projects for makerspaces.  These projects will be collected from some of the most innovative makers from around the world.  This website will integrate with Makerspaces.com and will focus on STEM projects that help students understand the principals of 3d printing, robotics, engineering, science and more.  There are plenty of great sites out there for maker projects such as Instructables.com and there are plenty of great sites for 3D printable models like Thingiverse.com.  We designed 3DPrintables.com to be a combination of the two sites in order to bring 3D printable projects to maker spaces.

Maybe a Few More Labels: Organizing an Elementary MakerSpace @KrissyVenosdale

Maybe a Few More Labels: Organizing an Elementary MakerSpace @KrissyVenosdale | Makerspace R Us | Scoop.it

"There are photos that float around the internet these days of new, shiny makerspaces that are starkly decorated rooms with bright colors and fresh paint.Um, I may have even taken some photos like this of our maker space when we opened it.   The floors are spotless, the tables sparkly, and the materials are no where to be seen.   Nobody is talking about managing a space filled with stuff.  I know, I know. Making is NOT about the stuff.  But at the end of the day, the details do matter.  It’s like an art room combined with a science room, mixed with an engineering space.

But then reality sets in.  There is STUFF.  Cardboard. Fat markers. Thin markers. Permanent markers. Dry erase markers. Duct tape. Masking tape. Clear tape.  Cardboard. More cardboard. More cardboard. And that?  It’s the tip of the iceberg."

6 Things to Consider Before Starting Your Makerspace (EdSurge News)

Tom Friedman argues in The World is Flat that all we really need to know to be successful in life is how to come up with an idea and execute on it. Children have the first part down--they are hardwired for creativity. The challenge is what comes next. That’s what makerspaces teach kids: the co
