Why PR fails with social media marketing

Why PR fails with social media marketing | All about Social Web | Scoop.it

Social media monitoring, social media strategy: Who is winning the PR versus social media war? How to be ahead of the competition....More specifically, while PR and social media are joined at the hip, they are by no means the same: PR just gets you noticed (and ultimately also increases sales). Until someone knows about you, how can they buy whatever you are offering? In contrast, social media marketing is hard to control and spreading the message highly depends on a person’s reputation as well as social networks spreading the message. In the PR context, information is shared with a selected group of people either by sending them a press release or product sample in the hopes that they will share their positive thoughts with a larger audience, such as newspaper readers reading a movie review.Sharing information and insights using social media means having little, if any, control about what people do with the information, such as re-mixing music to make a new track. Sometimes social media stories – especially public relations disasters – might be picked up by more traditional media, thereby allowing the news to reach an audience beyond social networks such as Facebook.Social media marketing can help an organization build good content to attract people or pull them in to your website or blog....

The challenge with social media is trying to control the uncontrollable.

Pablo's curator insight, July 19, 2013 9:56 PM

This article goes into depth why PR fails in social networks. The author of this article agrees with the authors of our book. For social networking to work you must incorporate engagement between you and your customers. Also the author gives three steps in which we as PR/Marketers should follow in order to be successful. Of these steps the last step really stuck out to me.  The last step “requires some critical skills, such as listening and responding politely and clearly to customer requests AND suggestions, as well as correcting mistakes identified”. (Gattiker, 2010)

Overall I agree with the author of this article. This article incorporates a lot of themes and concepts that we had discussed throughout the semester. After reading this article and the book I discovered that engagement is key point in social media marketing overall.

How to Understand, Define and Identify Online Influence

How to Understand, Define and Identify Online Influence | All about Social Web | Scoop.it

How do we define true influence, the kind that leads to real ROI and sales for brands? Simple - put the customer at the heart of the influence circle....

The main challenge is the definition of influencer by today’s social web meaning. Sure, you can create great content, get a ton of followers, social shares, etc. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to be any good for a brand to work with. There are way too many factors at play when it comes to influence that trying to gauge the term as a generic entity results in failure for the brands connecting with them....

"Yesterday we looked at some of the benefits and costs of building community on a blog – today I’d like to move onto some of the ‘how to’ by examining the stages of building community that I went through on Digital Photography School.

Build a CULTURE of Community – Not Just Engagement

Let me start by repeating the advice I gave yesterday that building community and reader interaction on a blog takes time. It won’t happen over night but develops day by day.

It is also something that YOU need to take the lead in as a blogger..."

Three Tips for Effective Content Marketing

Three Tips for Effective Content Marketing | All about Social Web | Scoop.it

Guest blogging is still as effective a tool as any to generate visibility and awareness for your brand website and it’s also a slow, yet efficient method to position your brand in comparison to the competition. However, it’s important to remember that you will want the best content to be uploaded to your very own website. In other words, don’t waste your copywriter’s talents on blog posts for other sites. While these may contain valuable links for your back linking profile and will help boost your writers’ authorship prowess, nothing will generate more of a buzz than good, potentially viral content on your very own site. As all top social media marketing agencies know, nowadays it’s becoming easier than ever to get the ball rolling in terms of virality – and it’s all thanks to social media. It’s almost free and it allows you to target your audience through increasingly refined methods. It’s also an excellent venue for potential client support issues that may arise, departing from a particular piece of content....

How Colors Affect Conversion Rate

How Colors Affect Conversion Rate | All about Social Web | Scoop.it

...Did you know that color accounts for 85% of the reason why you purchased a specific product? Or that full-colored ads in magazines are recognized 26% more than black and white ads?

The psychological elements go even deeper when you look at the specific meanings of colors. For example, if you use the color blue on your products, it will give your customers a calming effect…while black, on the other hand, gives your customers a sense of exclusivity.

So, the real question that comes to mind is: how should you use color within your marketing?...
