My recent post, “What To Say On LinkedIn When You’ve Been Laid Off” hit a nerve.

 

The element of the post that sparked the most debate was the advice that people who are out of work should clearly say so on LinkedIn. A number of people said the strategy had worked for them. Others said it just exacerbates the discrimination people already face when they are unemployed.

 

Those in the first camp don’t seem to be isolated cases — I heard from quite a few. They included Gina Bryan, who after more than a year out of work added recommendations to her LinkedIn profile to hit the 100% completeness mark. Within four months, she had a new gig, as a marketing professional at Integrus Architecture in Seattle.

Greylock VC and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman talked about his Web 3.0 idea (Big Data quel surprise) here at Web 2.0 about the implementation layer on top of this data.

 

Hoffman was steadfast in his idea that LinkedIn is a one of the cool kids. When Information Week’s David Carr prefaced asking Hoffman a question by, “LinkedIn is for old people,” Hoffman snapped back wittily, “Like the people that would give you a job?”

 

Carr went on to argue that young people already have established a social identity on Facebook, and have no need to join linkedIn. “We actually do reach a younger demographic,” Hoffman responded, citing statistics he couldn’t reveal. What he could reveal? That the social network is now adding “2 members per second.”
