A More Beautiful Question | An inquiry into the value of inquiry

A More Beautiful Question | An inquiry into the value of inquiry | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
A conversation about questioning, innovation, and creativity. Hosted by author Warren Berger.

With this blog, I’m going to explore that and other questions, such as:

How do we develop and foster the habit of questioning? How do we go about formulating better questions (or what might be thought of as “beautiful questions”)?And what happens after an important and “beautiful” question has been raised—what can we learn about the journey that starts with asking “why” or “what if” and eventually leads us to discovery, change, and progress?

On a more down-to-earth level, I want to use this blog to capture interesting instances of people, businesses, the media, and governments using questioning in a provocative way.

What Questions Did You Ask Today?

"The average five-year-old asks 65 questions per day, most of them starting with "why." The average 44-year-old manager only asks six questions per day; most of them starting with "when," "where," or "how much."

The number of questions we ask per day doesn't increase until retirement. Why retirement? Because that's when we start asking, "Where are my keys?" and "Why did I walk into this room?"

In this animated three-minute video, Chic Thompson the author of What a Great Idea!, will help you "jump start" your question asking ability."

Ariana Amorim's insight:

Such a great video! Some of the ideas presented:

The answer to any problem preexists. We need to ask the right question to reveal the answer. Thus, we don't find, create or invent creative solutions, we reveal them by asking great questions.

Try this: Ask your team to come up with 20 questions about your challenge before you try to solve it.

Asking great questions is a 3 step process:

Start with "What...?" and  "Why...?" questions, before "How...?" questions. The order is very important. If you fail to do this, you'll end up with solutions that are not suitable for your problem.

- WHAT is the result we want to see, feel and hear?

- WHY do we want to achieve this result?

- HOW are we going to achieve this result?

There are also some great tips at the end of the video for parents...

What questions did you ask today? ;-)

Questions, questions and more questions. What are the right questions?

Fabulous!

Jonas Salk:  "The answer to every problem pre-exists.  We need to ask the right Questions to reveal the answers."

Great tips...........Parents:  instead of asking "what did you learn today?", ask "what questions did you ask today?"

Desinging learning, we need to ask HOW last.  What and why first.  "What is the result we want to see, feel and hear."  Then:  Why do you want to achieve these results.  LAST:  How will we do it.

The Art of the 'Dumb' question - Think Jar Collective

The Art of the 'Dumb' question - Think Jar Collective | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

One of the top challenges we face as leaders is that of “enhancing creativity” within ourselves and within others. In taking on this challenge we must first comprehend the intimacy of the relationship between creativity and thinking. Our ability to be creative depends upon our capacity to think which in turn depends upon our ability to question not only our practices but also our beliefs and assumptions. We must learn to question the limits of our thinking. It is through this manner of questioning that we are able to rethink our thinking. Thus, the quality of our questions determines the quality of our creativity.

To enhance creativity, we must develop and maintain an attitude of creative questioning. We must become competent in the art of “asking dumb questions".

Dumb questions, the kind children ask but most adults know better than to ask, are born out of a desire to understand, out of curiosity not expectation. They stem from our imagination and are designed to engage us in thought. Dumb questions are simple questions that probe the obvious, and simultaneously challenge and direct our thinking.
