WHY POSITIVE ENCOURAGEMENT WORKS BETTER THAN CRITICISM

WHY POSITIVE ENCOURAGEMENT WORKS BETTER THAN CRITICISM | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

John Michel's curator insight, February 3, 2014 11:26 PM

Positive emotions generally work in an opposite way to negative emotions. So, while emotions like fear, anxiety, stress and anger narrow our focus, inhibit our concentration and decrease our cognitive abilities, positive emotions can do the opposite. When we’re feeling upbeat and happy, we’re more likely to have an inclusive focus than a self-centered outlook, and to perform better on cognitively demanding tasks.

6 Things Optimists Do Differently

6 Things Optimists Do Differently | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

Optimism is not an inborn trait bestowed on a lucky few.  It’s a skill that can be learned.  Here are six things optimists do and some ideas on how to follow in their footsteps:

1. They make optimal use of all available options.

2. They respect themselves for who they are.

3. They disconnect happiness from achievement.

4. They avoid negative people and create positivity.

5. They expect life to be a series of ups and downs.

The Nocebo Effect: How We Worry Ourselves Sick

The Nocebo Effect: How We Worry Ourselves Sick | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
The “nocebo effect” is the placebo effect’s malevolent Mr. Hyde. With nocebos (“I will harm”), dark expectations breed dark realities.
Ariana Amorim's insight:

Very interesting article about the good and the bad expectations we create, and their real effects. From the site: "With placebos (“I will please” in Latin), the mere expectation that treatment will help brings a diminution of symptoms, even if the patient is given a sugar pill. With nocebos (“I will harm”), dark expectations breed dark realities. In clinical drug trials, people often report the side effects they were warned about, even if they are taking a placebo".

happy is not a choice: the difference between happiness + positivity

happy is not a choice: the difference between happiness + positivity | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
You've probably heard quotes like "happiness is a choice" or "if you want to be happy, be" or "people are as happy as they make up their minds to be." (I'm probably guilty of using these words. Scroll through my Instagram feed and I bet you'll find "choose happy" or something along those lines amidst my many quote-themed photos.) In theory, these quotes come from a good place. They're meant to highlight the notion that, though you don't always have control of your circumstances, you have control over how you feel. Except... that's not true. Quotes like "choose happiness

It’s no surprise that the internet can be a pretty depressing place. Sure, there are some uplifting things here and there, lots of kittens in boxes, puppies playing with cockatoos, but it only takes one look at the comment section of a news article to make you wish you were a part of a different …

The Positive Emotion Diet: What Shape Are You In? | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

"What’s your “emotional diet” like?
Does it leave you feeling energized and able to get through the events of each day (both the enjoyable and challenging), or does it leave you feeling depleted and at the mercy of even the most minor of setbacks?

In this 7-minute video, psychologist Barbara Fredrickson explains that while it’s not always easy, by adopting a routine to generate positive emotions, you not only increase your happiness levels, but can alter your biological makeup for the better too."

Diminish Your Self-Critic

Diminish Your Self-Critic | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

Is your self-critic stronger than your self-worth?

"What I offer here is a way to begin to counteract the inner critic and reclaim your biggest, best, most powerful self.

What is this practice? It’s called, “I am.”
Here’s how you do it. Stand up, feet firmly planted, and speak aloud who you truly are. Speak loudly and say it with a strong voice — to the sky, to the hills, to the trees. Feel free to make your own list or use some of mine. Just do it. Just live into it. Just wait until you experience how good this feels!
READY?"

The Power of Negative Thinking

The Power of Negative Thinking | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
Pop psychology tells us we can't go wrong with positive thinking. But new studies show that taking account of our obstacles is essential to success.

Gabriele Oettingen's psychology lab at New York University has showed that visualizing our aims as already achieved can backfire. The positive imagery can be inspiring at first but it also tricks the mind into relaxing, as if the hard work is done.

This means the more compelling the mental scene of success, the more likely it is that your energy will seep away.

In the study, volunteers felt de-energized after visualizing success in an essay competition. In another, participants who fantasised about their goals for the coming week felt less energetic and achieved fewer of their goals.
