Give it Up (Greater Good in Action)

Give it Up (Greater Good in Action) | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

A trick to bring yourself lasting happiness.

Research suggests that one of the biggest challenges to lasting happiness is our great capacity for adaptation: We tend to get used to the things that bring us pleasure in life, and before long, their positive effects wear off. We no longer enjoy them in the way we once did. However, research has identified a way to sustain these little pleasures over time: by temporarily giving them up. That can lead us to enjoy and savor that activity more once we resume it—and the ability to savor the small pleasures in life is a key to happiness. This practice guides you through the process of abstaining from a pleasurable activity for a week as a way to heighten your appreciation of it. Over time, the goal is not only to derive more pleasure from this activity but to recognize how we take lots of pleasures for granted and to try to savor them more.

(From the article): Once you’ve started mapping out a way to get to where you want to go, the next step is to set a stretch goal toward what you want to achieve, says New Jersey psychologist Patricia Farrell, PhD and author of How to Be Your Own Therapist: A Step-by-Step Guide to Taking Your Life Back. Choose a goal that will help move you in the direction of your overall objective, but make sure it’s slightly out of your comfort zone, she says. You may not achieve it at first, but the more you work toward them, the more confidence you will build—and confidence is the enemy of self-limiting beliefs.

The Best Way to Change Your Habits? Use Your Environment

The Best Way to Change Your Habits? Use Your Environment | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

Since we know that discipline is built like a muscle—and can likewise be worn out—environmental changes might be useful in getting ourselves to do difficult tasks regularly.

Below I’ll outline some of my favorite methods found through the academic literature, as well as some personal tests conducted by myself and others.

Ariana Amorim's insight:

Good points and good tips here. Main ideas:

We are more reliant on environmental triggers than we’d like to think.

Using Your Environment to Change Behavior:

1.) Task association. Strictly associate an ‘outlet’ with a specific task. You can also use task association with environments:  start assigning certain locations with very particular activities.

2.) Reduce or increase friction. Your environment can  be tweaked to make certain tasks more difficult or easier to do. Tough habits stick when you can simplify the behavior.

3.) Using contextual cues. It's easier to make a habit consistent if it’s built off of an existing chain. In other words, Task X becomes easier to perform regularly if it is ALWAYS preceded or followed by Event Y.

4.) Routinize with systems. Success is most often the result of consistent execution of a single habit. Having too many choices is the enemy of long-term goals. In other words,  having ‘options’ makes consistent behavior harder to maintain. Spotting opportunities to create systems is the best way to make long-term goals a reality.
