“Negative Visualization” is one of the main tools of Stoicism.
Really thinking about just how awful things can be often has the ironic effect of making you realize they’re not that bad.

 

2) “As If”
The Stoics valued tranquility and thought being angry was a waste of time. But what should you do when your blood boils?
Force a smile. Soften your voice. Seneca thought if you act calm, you will become calm.

 

3) Make It A Treat
We want everything and we want it yesterday.
The Stoics, on the other hand, used to deliberately walk around on cold days without a coat. Or skip meals to become hungry. Why?
Denying yourself something makes you appreciate the things you take for granted.

 

4) It’s Okay To Stumble
Does Stoicism seem hard? Don’t want to think about how awful things can be right now? Don’t want to give up your ice cream for a day?
They knew that too. What did Epictetus tell his students after he taught them these Stoic lifehacks?

There are many, many different coaching models out there but I still haven’t found anything that beats the GROW model for simplicity, effectiveness and results. If you embrace the GROW model – your clients will love you and you’ll never lose track in a coaching session again.

So, you probably use the GROW model (or T-GROW) without even realizing it:

T – Topic (Session Topic)G – Goal (Session Goal)R – Reality (Where they are and what’s going on for them)O – Options (Ideas and brainstorming – what they COULD do to move forwards)W – Will Do (Their actions – what they WILL do to move forwards)

Self determination goes by many names in the mental health field…”client as expert”, “person centered”, “strength’s based”, and maybe least commonly as “solution focused”. However, the solution focused approach IS person centered, strengths based, and one of the main tenets is the client is the expert.

 

The resources presented in this article are from the University of Illinois’ Center on Mental Health Services Research and Policy. They present a self determination assessment and corresponding self determination life plan workbook. These are great tools to use when working with children as well as adults.
