Life Coach or Mentor? A Q&A with Both May Help You Decide

Life Coach or Mentor? A Q&A with Both May Help You Decide | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

What’s the difference between a coach and a mentor? Aside from cost, that is. In typical situations, coaches charge a fee, and mentors are volunteers. To find out what sets them apart, I spoke to three people—a career coach, an informal mentor (who has worked on an ad hoc basis with more than 30 mentees), and a formal mentor who works with mentees via a defined program.

This Year Make a Manifesto vs Resolution - Forbes

This Year Make a Manifesto vs Resolution - Forbes | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

It’s that time of the year when we look in the mirror and promise ourselves to make more money, get fit and be happier. We busy ourselves with making and swapping new year’s resolution lists.

Then we get a few months into the other side of the calendar year and find ourselves falling back into our old routines.  This is the challenge with resolutions.  They are a temporary fix. If you want a game changing year ahead, then what you need to make is a manifesto.

Shaking up habits through disruptive realism

Shaking up habits through disruptive realism | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

This is a cool video from the innovative design firm Frog Design.  In the vid Dave Hoffer shares some examples of “disruptive realism” on the street and how it might cause people to get unstuck from rigid thought patterns.  Disruptive realism is like experiencing something unexpected that causes you to think in new ways.  This is relevant to creativity because one thing that holds us back from relevant creative solutions is when we keep looking at the world the same old way.

Using Visual Journals as workbooks in Coaching

Using Visual Journals as workbooks in Coaching | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

When working with people in a coaching situation, pictures, metaphors, imagery and drawings become a vital tool to make the client unterstand his situation, explore his opportunities, discover his ressources and reflect his history. Based on very good experiences that I had made with journals, we extended the idea of working with a customized “book” of visual templates. This way, the coachee can partly work on his own, use the journal as a foundation for discussion with selected people and structure his thoughts and findings along a suitable process.

What can your iPhone teach you about happiness?

What can your iPhone teach you about happiness? | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

A while ago I posted about using a happiness boosting iPhone app created by researcher and author of The How of Happiness, Sonja Lyubomirsky.

For the past couple months I’ve been using another app, In Flow.

What I liked about this one was that it replicates the method that big happiness researchers like Dan Gilbert have used in their studies. The app prompts you at random times and asks you to fill in:

How you feel

What you’re doing

Who you’re with

Where you’re at

So, over time, you can start to draw correlations.

Ariana Amorim's insight:

Interesting.

Our life is a prototype in constant refinement

Our life is a prototype in constant refinement | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

How can I build a path for the growth of innovation in companies that take us to the welfare and happiness of the people and not exclusively for those who are shareholders of these companies?

(...)

Tim Brown presents five ways to practice in our daily lives the principles of Design Thinking:

1 – Be optimistic, collaborative and generative.

2 – Think of life as a prototype.

3 – Don´t ask “what?” ask “why?”.

4 – Demand divergent options.

5 -Once a day, deeply observe the ordinary.

These are some important points to reflect and apply in our daily life if we want to evolve towards sustainable well-being. But they are not just notes for life outside of work. Are notes for ours 24 hours and must be adapted or suited to working environments where we operate, that is, according to our role in organizations.

Ariana Amorim's insight:

We can learn how to practice design thinking principles both at work and at home. We can do more than just design... we can live design.

4 Simple Questions To Amplify The “Why” Behind Your Goals | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
It's easy to think up goals for the year. Here are 4 questions to amplify what you need to achieve your goals, for next year or any goal.
Ariana Amorim's insight:

1. What will happen when you meet your goal?

2. What will happen if you don’t meet your goals?

3. What won’t happen when you meet your goal?

4. What won’t happen if you don’t meet your goal?

These 4 question will help you create a propulsion mechanism to achieve what you want. It covers all the bases to understand the pleasure and pain of achieving, and not achieving, your goals.

Fixed vs growth mindset – A key attribute behind improvement and growth in executive coaching programs

Fixed vs growth mindset – A key attribute behind improvement and growth in executive coaching programs | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

When reflecting on successful coaching engagements, I have tried to identify the key common attributes of these individuals. What has separated these individuals who have been receptive to the coaching process in comparison to those who tend to resist the key concepts, insights and changes that would appear to make them more effective?

From my experience, it appears to come down to mindset; whether individuals have a fixed or a growth mindset.

Ariana Amorim's insight:

Are you willing to test your mindset? You'll find a link to take a test on this post.

The Power of Belief - Mindset and Success: Eduardo Briceno at TEDxManhattanBeach

The way we understand our intelligence and abilities deeply impacts our success. Based on social science research and real life examples, Eduardo Briceño  articulates how mindset, or the understanding of intelligence and abilities, is key. When students or adults see their abilities as fixed, whether they think they're naturals or just not built for a certain domain, they avoid challenge and lose interest when things get hard. Conversely, when they understand that abilities are developed, they more readily adopt learning-oriented behaviors such as deliberate practice and grit that enable them to achieve their goals. But this belief is itself malleable, and there are clear actions we can all take to establish a growth mindset and enable success for our children, our peers and ourselves.

How do great leaders inspire action?

How do great leaders inspire action? | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

Why are most messages so uninspiring, so unconvincing?

By the same token, what magic do both the speeches of Martin Luther King and the marketing of Apple have that move us to believe and act?

Simon Sinek, author of Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, has an interesting theory:

People don’t buy what you do. They buy why you do it… Start with “Why.”
