Engagement is such a hot topic these days that I’ve been reading a great deal on what motivates us at work. When I read Kim Marshall‘s succinct synthesis of Kathleen Cushman’s article “Eight Conditions of Motivated Learning,” I was struck by similarity to the current thinking of business managers and human resources professionals. No matter our age — adolescents, adults, or children — motivation depends on our perceived value of the activity,  expectations of success, and is inhibited by stress. From the article: "Forgiveness is the practice of letting go of the suffering caused by someone else’s wrongdoing (or even our own). It does not mean excusing, overlooking, forgetting, condoning, or trivializing the harm or jumping to a premature or superficial reconciliation; it doesn’t necessarily require reconciliation at all. Instead, it involves changing our relationship to an offense through understanding, compassion, and release. Two decades of social psychology research have repeatedly demonstrated the emotional, physical, and social benefits of forgiveness. True forgiveness repairs relationships and restores inner well-being. "

I often get this question: how can I use stories or story tools when networking? My replies are much like my colleague Shawn Callahan's: it's less about the stories you tell and more about the questions you ask to evoke stories from others.


As Maya Angelou has said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."


Oh, so true! So here Shawn has written a quick post that demonstrates the kinds of questions you can ask at networking events that will generate stories. Remember, networking is not about broadcasting who you are, it's about developing meaningful relationships with others so you can know who you want to do business with.


Enjoy these questions and I bet you'll get ideas for additional ones you can ask.
