Why Hiring a Business Coach is TOTALLY Worth the Money

Why Hiring a Business Coach is TOTALLY Worth the Money | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
I recently started doing business coaching with one of my personal heroes, Pamela Slim. I used to read Pam's blog, Escape from Cubicle Nation, back in 2009 when I was trying to start freelancing and was stuck in a cubicle all day and wasn't sure how to take the leap from the corporate world to solo-preneurship. I didn't have any local role models; I didn't know anyone in my own city who did what I wanted to do for a living. So I lived vicariously through Internet heroes like Pamela Slim, who showed me the possibilities of a magical world of people on the Internet, working from home on their own terms while wearing pajamas, and making a good living at it. That's all I wanted, early on - I just wanted to work from home and be with my family. I had modest goals and simple needs. Over the years, I've gone … Continue reading →

Without Emotional Intelligence, Mindfulness Doesn’t Work

Without Emotional Intelligence, Mindfulness Doesn’t Work | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

We believe that by focusing on mindfulness-as-corporate-fad, leaders run the risk of missing other opportunities to develop their critical emotional skills. Instead, executives would be better served by deliberately assessing and improving their full range of emotional intelligence capabilities. Some of that work may well involve mindfulness training and practice, but it can also include formal EQ assessment and coaching. Other tools and approaches include role-playing, modeling other leaders you admire, and rehearsing in your mind how you might handle emotional situations differently. By understanding that the mechanism behind mindfulness is the improvement of broader emotional intelligence competencies, leaders can more intentionally work on all of the areas that will have the strongest impact on their leadership.

What fear can teach us

What fear can teach us | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
Imagine you're a shipwrecked sailor adrift in the enormous Pacific. You can choose one of three directions and save yourself and your shipmates -- but each choice comes with a fearful consequence too. How do you choose? In telling the story of the whaleship Essex, novelist Karen Thompson Walker shows how fear propels imagination, as it forces us to imagine the possible futures and how to cope with them.
Ariana Amorim's insight:
"We all have fears, some of which can be quite vivid for those with active imaginations. As children, we're encouraged to think of fear as a weakness, something we must conquer, fight, or overcome. In this TED Talk, Karen Thompson Walker invites listeners to conceptualize their fears in a different way: as stories. Fear is an unintentional form of storytelling, she argues, with characters, plots, imagery, and elements of suspense. Drawing on the story of the men from the whaleship Essex, Walker challenges us to view ourselves as the authors and readers of our fears, and shares how this perspective can have a profound impact on our lives."
Choose one of your fears and craft a story around it. How does this shift your perception?

Younger and Older Executives Need Different Things from Coaching

Younger and Older Executives Need Different Things from Coaching | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
The former tend to want rules; the latter, insights.
Ariana Amorim's insight:
A research by Lois Tamirand Laura Finfer explored the relationship between the age of an executive and the coaching process or coaching outcomes. Their goal was to identify how executives in their thirties might differ from older executives when they receive the specialized attention of executive coaching.
They analyzed 72 executive-coaching engagements to evaluate the relationship of age to 4 variables: Responsiveness, Self-reflection, Nondefensiveness, and Degree of Change.
Results indicate that the age group 30 to 39 was significantly lower on Self-reflection and Degree of Change compared with executives in the 40 to 49 and 50 to 59 age groups. In light of these findings, they recommend two approaches for those who manage, mentor, or coach younger executives to help them reach their full potential.
