The Major Pitfalls For A New Coach ‹ http://coachfederation.org/blog | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

Yes, the coaching journey is very exciting and tempting for new coaches on the block, but it’s also easy to be trapped by the old behaviors or beliefs coaches used to have as a human prior to becoming a coach (still a human, though). Knowing the pitfalls is a must-have for new coaches to start and remain successfully on the coaching career path.

Ariana Amorim's insight:

Avoid these common pitfalls:

Give advice

Talk too much

Inflexibility (tied to a script and not being flexible to the need of the coachee)

Undermine the potential of coachee

Fail to build trust

Small is Better: Lessons from a Horsewoman, by Kelly Wendorf

Small is Better: Lessons from a Horsewoman, by Kelly Wendorf | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
"As a horsewoman, I've come to see that so many theories that work with eliciting real learning and collaboration for horses, work magically with their human counterparts. The brilliant horseman and trainer (as well as second degree aikido black belt), Mark Rashid, teaches how to reward the try, which rewards a horse in response to any of his micro-tries towards the desired action. "Because we are constantly looking for the big thing (the flawless lead change, the effortless transition, the sliding stop), we often look right past the most important part--the try that tells us our horse is understanding our request," he writes. The more sensitive one becomes to the smallest of tries towards the right thing, and the quicker one rewards those tries, the quicker and more solidly the horse learns and grows. It's the same for us. The more respect we can give ourselves or each other for the 'micro tries', the quicker and more solidly we can grow." Kelly Wendorf shares more about the power of small in this insightful piece.

How to figure out what you want - Unstuck

How to figure out what you want - Unstuck | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

It’s all too easy to lose sight of we truly want. Digital overload, societal conventions, agendas from work, friends, family — all of these compete with our personal motives. To get back to our beliefs, we need to get a little selfish (in a good way). One or more of these techniques should help.

Why Coaching Works

Why Coaching Works | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
In 2009, I was fortunate enough to have a book published - The Coaching Toolkit (my mum was very proud, but I was quite embarassed with the cover, which is a bit of a shocker!)  At the time I had been doing a great deal of work with my co-author, Mike Harbour, to set up coaching…

My New Book about Habit Formation, as Distilled in 21 Sentences.

My New Book about Habit Formation, as Distilled in 21 Sentences. | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
Every Wednesday is List Day, or Tip Day, or Quiz Day.
Today: My new book about habit-formation, handily distilled into 21 sentences.
As I may have mentioned, I’m working on Better Than Before, a book about how we can change our habits. It’s at the copy-editing stage now, so it’s really nearing completion — both thrilling and slightly terrifying. (If you want to know when Better Than Before goes on sale, sign up here.)
In each chapter, I identify a strategy we can use to make and break habits.
I was thinking of Lytton Strachey’s observation, “Perhaps the best test of a man’s intelligence is his capacity for making a summary.” So I decided to try to summarize each chapter of Better Than Before in a single sentence.  The entire gist of the book, in 21 sentences.
You may think, “Twenty-one strategies! That’s overwhelming.” It may seem like a lot, but it’s actually helpful, because you can choose the ones that work for you. For instance, if you’re a Rebel, you’re not likely to use the Strategy of Scheduling, but the Strategy of Identity would work well

5 Signs That You've Fallen Into The Trap Of Parent-Child Leadership

5 Signs That You've Fallen Into The Trap Of Parent-Child Leadership | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
Today’s managers talk a lot about wanting employees to be more accountable and to act on their own initiative. And yet, those same managers turn around and say to employees: “I have to give you assignments; I have to give you feedback; I have to hold you accountable.” This leaves employees, much like children, left to take feedback, to take assignments and to passively wait to be held accountable.

Today’s top-performing organizations are leaving this style of Parent-Child leadership behind and replacing it with a new model of leadership that treats employees like adults who have unlimited potential and who deserve the opportunity to take control of their own futures. Establishing an Adult-to-Adult dynamic encourages employees to become self-leading and self-sufficient and results in a more motivated, fulfilled and energized workforce. Employees are more aligned with their organization’s vision and more committed to helping the organization achieve that vision.
