mike rhoades: Goals vs Desires or: Why We're all so Pissed Off

mike rhoades: Goals vs Desires or: Why We're all so Pissed Off | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

Take a step back and look at the circumstances in your life.  What would you call goals and what would you call desires?  What do you have control over and what don't you have control over?  If you don't have any control over it; don't let it control you.

Ariana Amorim's insight:

Note from the post: "This is primarily a writing blog.  And this idea of goals vs desires has really become interesting to me as I craft my characters.  The idea of misplaced goals and the frustration that comes from that has been really valuable to me as I map out the motivations for my characters and the good or bad choices they make.  Have you had problems with any of your characters and fleshing out believable motivations?  Maybe exploring what your character's goals/desires are will help?"

The Science of Character

While virtues have been around since Aristotle, two seminal psychologists from the University of Pennsylvania, Martin Seligman and the late Chris Peterson, undertook research to identify the universal traits that are best about human beings. They combed through nearly 2,500 years of history to identify six core “virtues” found across religions, cultures, nations, and belief systems.

The virtues that made the cut were wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. Each virtue contains three to five character strengths, with a total of 24 topping the list. You, just like every other person you work with, have five “signature” strengths - like a unique strain of DNA - that make up the “real you.”

If you're interested in learning more about it, check out award-winning director Tiffany Shlain's 8 minute film, The Science of Character.

Imagine you're a shipwrecked sailor adrift in the enormous Pacific. You can choose one of three directions and save yourself and your shipmates -- but each choice comes with a fearful consequence too. How do you choose?

In her TED talk titled What fear can teach us Karen Thompson Walker explains how fear is like an unintentional story we tell ourselves. By learning how to read our fears and imagine possible futures, we can make smarter decisions.

Over time, our society's notion of success has been reduced to money and power. How do you measure success?

Sarah Frame's curator insight, March 31, 2:00 AM

Love this! Especially like the bit about what is said in a funeral eulogy. I am mindful though that it isn't always easy to make adjustments 'for a better life' when we are striving to keep jobs, meet targets, stay afloat financially, make relationships work etc. When I was juggling bringing up a young family and building a career, the last thing I really needed was someone saying I needed to make time for me too! But at least be kind to yourself, stop expecting more of yourself than you do of others, accept you will make mistakes and celebrate being able to pick yourself up, admit it and move on,sometimes the best we can do is muddle through. I often didn't recognise that good enough was in fact good enough.
