The neuroscience of asking insightful questions

The neuroscience of asking insightful questions | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
I teach coaching skills to leaders. When I get to the section on how to ask questions (an important part of learning to coach) I might ask a trick question to start off: “How many of you are good at solving problems?”. Without fail, almost all hands shoot enthusiastically into the air. There’s nothing wrong …

We are not guiding if we are solving for the kids. We need to guide kids to their own solutions to the challenges that they face. Asking questions rather than giving answers tests our patience and our desire to "help," but we do not help if we simply give answers.
Marshall Alston's curator insight, March 27, 1:35 PM
Depending on what you are trying to learn will depend on how you ask a question.

Why we need to be watched - Pamela Slim

Why we need to be watched - Pamela Slim | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

When I heard Jim Collins speak at a Fast Company conference here in Phoenix in 2000, he shared the story of his own career journey, where he named a notebook "A Bug Called Jim" and observed his behavior for 15 years as a scientist would observe a bug. He noted things like "Jim gets very distracted in long meetings. Jim does not like long meetings." and "Jim lights up when he starts to teach." I often share this story with clients who are so ingrained in their habits and patterns that they do not notice what are obvious things to my watcher eyes. You can learn to take the role of compassionate observer in your own life. If it is too hard, engage someone from the outside. We can't change what we can't see.

10 hard skills to learn that will last a lifetime

10 hard skills to learn that will last a lifetime  | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
To survive growing up on a remote cattle ranch in the middle of Wyoming, I needed to be scrappy, gritty, and tenacious. If I wasn’t keeping an eye out for rattle snakes, I was avoiding horned bulls from charging my horse as I tried to cut them from a herd of cows.

I learned many important life lessons on that ranch, not the least is that it takes hard work, sweat, and mental toughness to get to the top and stay there. I took many of those lessons with me into the FBI as an undercover and counterintelligence agent for 24 years.

Here are 10 hard skills to learn that will last you a lifetime:
