Getting to Cleveland: Seth Godin on Gratitude, by Katie Steedly

Getting to Cleveland: Seth Godin on Gratitude, by Katie Steedly | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
According to writer Seth Godin, there are two ways to live in the world: with a "have to" attitude or a "get to" attitude. The latter mindset opens up the world and all the possibility of goodness therein and the former shuts down the heart and closes the door on the world. So the question is, how do we want to live? Too often, we have taken the gifts around us for granted and end up feeling entitled. We can begin to find gratitude by looking at our lives with open eyes and take steps toward being grateful, even in the hard times. We may not always know where this will take this, but -as Seth Godin saysno one gets "to Cleveland by knowing every turn from here to Cleveland. You start driving and get directions as you go." This is the essence of living a life of gratitude.
Ariana Amorim's insight:
This morning, as you encounter something unpleasant that you feel you "have to" do, try changing your perspective and say that you "get to" do this. How does this change of attitude affect your experience of the moment?

Okay, so what do I ask to build rapport and trust? The short answer is to be human! Find out what’s important to them and what their interests are. Start by getting to know them and then revisit asking about the things they care about in future one on one meetings.
Andrea Ross's curator insight, September 29, 5:51 AM

I'm a big fan of one-on-ones as it allows some quality time with your staff both professionally and personally. It gives you the opportunity to bounce ideas and continue to build rapport & trust.  If as a manager you feel you just can't squeeze that in then it's probably time to re-look at your diary as this needs to be a top priority. If you don't they'll find someone else that will. Happy Friday all.

The beauty of what we'll never know

The beauty of what we'll never know | All About Coaching | Scoop.it
Almost 30 years ago, Pico Iyer took a trip to Japan, fell in love with the country and moved there. A keen observer of the human spirit, Iyer professes that he now feels he knows far less about Japan -- or, indeed, about anything -- than he thought he knew three decades ago. In this lyrical meditation on wisdom, Iyer expands on this curious insight about knowledge gained with age: that the more we know, the more we see how little we know.

Instead of setting goals and focusing on them, ask: What’s the process that might get me to this goal? Then obsessively focus on the process and forget about the goal.
