Great Coaching Questions: What Are They and When Do You Use Them?

Great Coaching Questions: What Are They and When Do You Use Them? | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

What scientists and coaches have in common is curiosity and a need to ask the right questions. Wrong questions elicit the wrong data, or insights, goals, actions, results.

The right questions literally create new realities, when asked at the right times.

A Question to Leaders Everywhere: What Questions Are You Asking?

A Question to Leaders Everywhere: What Questions Are You Asking? | All About Coaching | Scoop.it

I collect questions!

Not just any questions but those kind of questions that seem to have the ability to turn things inside-out, upside-down and sometimes, right-way up.

(From the article): Smart leaders understand the importance and power of good questions. It is said that the mind works best in the presence of a question and so the right question leads to ‘right thinking’ and ultimately, the ‘right actions’. The need today is for leaders to remain curious rather than certain or as Mark Twain put it, ‘It is not what we don’t know that gets us into trouble but rather what we know for certain that just ain’t so’.

Questions are powerful. They build connections, challenge assumptions, spark ideas, show we care. Learning to ask questions takes practice. Often we’re taught how to answer, not how to ask.

What Questions Did You Ask Today?

"The average five-year-old asks 65 questions per day, most of them starting with "why." The average 44-year-old manager only asks six questions per day; most of them starting with "when," "where," or "how much."

The number of questions we ask per day doesn't increase until retirement. Why retirement? Because that's when we start asking, "Where are my keys?" and "Why did I walk into this room?"

In this animated three-minute video, Chic Thompson the author of What a Great Idea!, will help you "jump start" your question asking ability."

Ariana Amorim's insight:

Such a great video! Some of the ideas presented:

The answer to any problem preexists. We need to ask the right question to reveal the answer. Thus, we don't find, create or invent creative solutions, we reveal them by asking great questions.

Try this: Ask your team to come up with 20 questions about your challenge before you try to solve it.

Asking great questions is a 3 step process:

Start with "What...?" and  "Why...?" questions, before "How...?" questions. The order is very important. If you fail to do this, you'll end up with solutions that are not suitable for your problem.

- WHAT is the result we want to see, feel and hear?

- WHY do we want to achieve this result?

- HOW are we going to achieve this result?

There are also some great tips at the end of the video for parents...

What questions did you ask today? ;-)
