I often get this question: how can I use stories or story tools when networking? My replies are much like my colleague Shawn Callahan's: it's less about the stories you tell and more about the questions you ask to evoke stories from others.


As Maya Angelou has said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."


Oh, so true! So here Shawn has written a quick post that demonstrates the kinds of questions you can ask at networking events that will generate stories. Remember, networking is not about broadcasting who you are, it's about developing meaningful relationships with others so you can know who you want to do business with.

Being able to choose something new outside of past programming means being able to see with new eyes and hear with new ears. Changing around some of the people, places and things exposes you to different aspects of self that lie just below the surface of doing things the same way over and over.

There is a development process in becoming a better coach or learning how to motivate others to learn and change. As the coach develops his/her perspective and skill, he/she moves from a focus on the problem to a focus on the process (the interactions with the other person) and then to a focus on the person.

What Questions Did You Ask Today?

"The average five-year-old asks 65 questions per day, most of them starting with "why." The average 44-year-old manager only asks six questions per day; most of them starting with "when," "where," or "how much."

The number of questions we ask per day doesn't increase until retirement. Why retirement? Because that's when we start asking, "Where are my keys?" and "Why did I walk into this room?" 

In this animated three-minute video, Chic Thompson the author of What a Great Idea!, will help you "jump start" your question asking ability."

Such a great video! Some of the ideas presented:

 

The answer to any problem preexists. We need to ask the right question to reveal the answer. Thus, we don't find, create or invent creative solutions, we reveal them by asking great questions.

 

Try this: Ask your team to come up with 20 questions about your challenge before you try to solve it.

 

Asking great questions is a 3 step process:

Start with "What...?" and  "Why...?" questions, before "How...?" questions. The order is very important. If you fail to do this, you'll end up with solutions that are not suitable for your problem.

 

- WHAT is the result we want to see, feel and hear?

- WHY do we want to achieve this result?

- HOW are we going to achieve this result?

 

There are also some great tips at the end of the video for parents...
