Solar power home storage systems put to test

Solar power home storage systems put to test | All about batteries | Scoop.it
Home storage systems for electricity produced by photovoltaics facilities are gaining attractiveness, as their costs are declining.
eric roberts's insight:

I am getting bored with reading articles about the favored Lithium-Ion battery technologies. These batteries are thrown at us on a daily basis.

New batteries are starting to emerge, such as the Sodium-Ion cells battery, but in the mean-time we sell and fit millions of old- fashioned lead-acid batteries. These battery products have become the Mr. reliable of the car market. Lasting five or six years, they are a very cost effective product, that we take for granted.

Due to emission considerations, the lead-acid battery could be getting a facelift. Big changes are afoot in the world’s auto industry. Other battery technologies are leaping ahead. There are however moves afoot to revamp the old 12-Volt battery system to a new 48-Volt system that would transform and reduce a cars emission figures.

eric roberts's insight:

This is a refreshing article to me because it reminds me that we still have millions of old fashioned gas burning cars, that we at normal garages can work on and bring us employment.

The world has gone mad with the rush to put all the garages and the millions of the workforce that work in this sector, out of a JOB.

Yes, that’s right? When the electric cars start to take over, then there will be millions of people who work in the auto-sector without any jobs.

The useless politicians do not have a clue as to the enormity of problem that they will create, the Auto industry is vast and millions will be out of work. They will be no engines to service, no car parts companies, no service stations, and they will become obsolete.

Battery storage on a large scale-Storing The Sun’s Energy Just Got A Whole Lot Cheaper

Battery storage on a large scale-Storing The Sun’s Energy Just Got A Whole Lot Cheaper | All about batteries | Scoop.it
We are witnessing the dawn of a revolution in which the grid rapidly increases renewable energy penetration, and lithium-ion batteries play an increasingly important role.
eric roberts's insight:

This is a great article and does look like the eventual total solar energy solution for the future. In my opinion, we have to create this type of infrastructure, to supply and store power through battery storage systems.

This should start with looking at new business start-up projects similar to the one in this great article. In my opinion, we will need a new generating system, to run along-side the old system. At the moment we are trying to combine the two.

new areas could be established for any new business start ups, with a new solar storage sytem already in place. Similar to all new houses should be fitted with solar panels. At one time, central heating was a luxury item, but now it is part of a new house build. Some of these things would lead to a gradual switch over to solar power, instead of all these solar people running around like headless chickens. We di not seam to have a coordinated plan?

This is a great article about future transport for inner cities. Not electric cars, but e-bikes and electric scooters(segways). I have seen electric bikes on our local roads.

The first one that i saw was amazing. This guy was on his bike just riding on a flat road. When the flat road turned into a slight hill the guy just glided up the hill without any effort.

It did not click with me at the time but the guy was riding an E-Bike. I was amazed how effortless it looked?

Industry Outlook is a regular Data Center Journal Q&A series that presents expert views on market trends, technologies and other issues relevant to data centers and IT.
eric roberts's insight:

The race for Lithium-Ion batteries is driving me crazy? This article shows how a company is using Lithium now to replace sealed lead acid batteries.

The Lithium battery is yet to prove itself over a period of time. In my opinion, it has also still a fire risk. These batteries have to act as a backup for the mains power failure so that data can still be recovered, or the computers can still be used.

Some large institutes such as Banks have massive back-up systems with hundreds of small VRLA batteries all connected together, just in case of a power failure.

The VRLA batteries have been used for years now and are well proven. They can also be recycled, in fact, 95% of all lead acid batteries are recycled. The lithium battery has yet no record of any recycling capabilities.

World's Largest Storage Battery Will Power Los Angeles | All about batteries | Scoop.it
More than 18,000 lithium ion battery packs would replace a gas-fired power plant used to meet peak demand
eric roberts's insight:

Although, this is good news for the future of Los Angeles (LA). The power storage solution though is well overdue?

They are expected to have many blackouts shortly. The good news is that LA is not the only large city to try overcome supply problems. Countries are recognising that cheap solar energy and electricity that is produced by wind turbines is the way forward.

The only problem is to find a solution to store the energy that is produced during the day and then releasing it at night when the demand is high. Here in the UK, it is common knowledge that they are looking for storage solutions in and around the vast London area.

Three UK research entities have teamed up in a partnership to develop sodium-ion cells as a low-cost alternative to lithium-ion batteries for solar energy storage.
eric roberts's insight:

As I have written on many occasions, the collection and storage of solar energy is becoming a major issue to many government backed schemes. Here in the UK we are no different?

The task of solving the problem of a viable battery storage system has been tackled at the WMG, part of the University of Warwick. The work has been carried out in conjunction with two companies, Faradion and Moixa. The three partners in this project have worked together to develop the Sodium-Ion cells battery.

Earlier this month, engineers at the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA) announced they made a breakthrough in magnesium battery technology that could lead to smaller, longer-lasting rechargeable batteries for “everything from cars...
eric roberts's insight:

In the recent past, earlier in the year (2016), scientific engineers from the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), came up with the idea of using magnesium battery technology as a new concept that could eventually, replace the Lithium-Ion battery that is currently in favour with the auto and telecommunications sector.

The development of this new battery would give it an advantage in size, because it could be made much smaller and longer lasting, than the technologies that are used at the moment. The new battery development could be used for things as diverse as mobile phones and car batteries.

The worse ones i would say are golfers. We get more problems from golfers than any other battery buying sector.

They seem to be oblivious to the charging requirements of their batteries. They are always claiming that their batteries are faulty, when they only required the correct charging for a sealed AGM battery.

I am though, fearful for the future of the millions of workers that are now employed in the automotive sector. I own a small garage facility in Halifax UK. I employ 12 local people repairing and servicing regular petrol and diesel driven cars.I do not dispute your predictions, but God help us if they come true. Only the rich will be able to buy these things and millions of us will be without work. I also wonder where the power will come from to charge up the millions of these predicted monsters, when they are plugged in to be charge up every night. The power supply issue should be solved first? also I just cannot imagine 200 cars turning up in Halifax town centre with batteries that need re-charging? the whole country could become grid-locked. Car Battery Buying Guide

Car Battery Buying Guide | All about batteries | Scoop.it
Read our Car Battery Buying Guide from the experts at Consumer Reports you can trust to help you make the best purchasing decision.
eric roberts's insight:

This is a very in depth report and some good consumer advice. However? The consumer should look for a few other pointers when buying a new car battery?

These days, price is everything. The market for car batteries, is split into two camps. The price and the people who know what they are looking for. The second part,(the people who know what they are looking for) can also be split up. Some drivers go for a certain brand of battery. Here in the UK the most popular brands are Lucas, Varta and Bosch car batteries. People know these names are prepared to pay a higher price.

They know that the better known brands are more reliable. Here at our head office in Halifax Yorkshire, UK we also fit the batteries for the consumer. We find that we are very highly trusted, with our warranties and people will have our own brand, Apollo-Power. This can be replicated all over the world.

In the USA car batteries are sold by many of the giant retailers such as Walmart. These brands are sourced and fitted out with the stores own brand names. The warranties on these car batteries are trusted by the consumer.
