New materials could make lithium-air batteries possible with more energy than lithium ion batteries. | Science Teaching Ideas
eric roberts's insight:

In my opinion this is the main competitor to Lithium-Ion. This is the first UK filling station to come into operations.

How Scientists, Car Companies & The Military Are Creating The Smartest Energy Solution On The Market

How Scientists, Car Companies & The Military Are Creating The Smartest Energy Solution On The Market | All about batteries | Scoop.it
Batteries are the linchpin to greening the world's electricity supply. But the technology isn't there yet. Can we make it happen?
eric roberts's insight:

Hi This is the best way to get faster results when we are trying to develop new greener battery technologies, and that is to get the armed forces or space research.

many of the new inventions of our times, were invented on behalf of these requirements.

The Mars lander used lithium batteries on its recent mission and the American military also used this battery technology for the Stealth aircraft, to help them e;eliminate detection, lead acid batteries would be detected.

eric roberts's insight:

Lithium Ion batteries are used in everything ?

Lithium Ion or Li-on  batteries for short are being used on many things these days, especially in the transport industry to power many different types of systems. They are now used in electric driven vehicle such as the Toyota Prius, and because of their lightness are used in many aircraft to supply electricity.

Using this type of battery is not a new thing. The batteries were actually developed for use in the USA military on such things as stealth bombers. Because of their construction the Li-On batteries can not be detected by enemy radar. This type of battery is also used for the space exploration crafts, to power their motors by using solar energy to recharge the batteries. These batteries however were thought to be responsible for a fire on-board a Japanese Airlines 787 that was parked on the runway in Boston USA.

Like other fuel saving devices these planes were fitted with the latest Li-On batteries, this is all part of a drive from all kinds of transport manufacturers to produce more fuel efficient engines to reduce carbon footprints.

The batteries are used to power electric systems that were once powered by hydraulic pumps.

Li-On batteries are known to catch fire

if they are over charged and once they catch fire they are difficult to extinguish because there chemical make up produces Oxygen which feeds the fire.

The batteries fitted to this plane were made by the GS Yuasa Corp who are looking into the matter with the National Transport Safety Board, but as yet no proof can be attributed to a faulty battery although this is suspected.
