Where do batteries go to die?
St. George Daily Spectrum
Batteries are essential to our daily lives. They are everywhere — in our cell phones, lap tops, iPods, kitchen appliances and garden tools.
eric roberts's insight:

95% of waste lead acid batteries are recycled.

Most of the old batteries that are removed from our cars and trucks are collected by scrap dealers and then they are sent to be recycled to a waste battery re-processing plant such as the one used by Exide Batteries.

The complete battery starts out at one end of the process and ends up at the other end as part of a new battery. Even the plastic is broken up into very small pieces and then mixed with new material before been made into a new battery casing. These re-cycled casings (battery boxes) are always made into black batteries because of the mixture of colours, any white or opaque coloured battery has been made from new materials and therefor has not been re-cycled.

In my opinion this is great news, and makes the lead acid battery greener than people think, which is more than we can say about the lithium-Ion batteries .

Can DOE build a better electric car battery?
eric roberts's insight:

Almost all EV/PHEVs store electrical energy in lithium-ion batteries—

These batteries are very similar to the batteries used in lap-top computers and the cell phones that we all use today. The average car that runs on fossil fuels will do about 300 miles on a full tank of fuel. This has to be the

target for electric driven cars, these cars must also be responsive and able to accelerate and drive like the petrol driven cars in order that motorists will drive them, and also the car must be able to compete with the fossil fuel cars in distance travelled, they must cover the 300 miles before having to have a full charge again, whilst costing the same or even at a cheaper rate.

This would mean a big improvement from the Lithium-Ion batteries that are used on today’s electric cars. To try to achieve this a group has been set up at the ARPA-E to try to completely redesign and re-evaluate each section and parts used in the Lithium-Ion battery, to help create a completely new battery that can also be produced at a lower cost.

Big 'liquid batteries' could mean a better, cleaner grid | Greenbang

Big 'liquid batteries' could mean a better, cleaner grid | Greenbang | All about batteries | Scoop.it

Liquid batteries could provide the answer

All the major countries are looking for the large-scale energy storage challenges of a much cleaner electricity grid. A  switch to store much  cleaner power such as wind or solar would require some form of energy storage to ensure the electricity is saved and the lights stay on even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing. However, using standard battery technology isn’t a realistic option, as it’s difficult — and expensive — to scale. New types of storage batteries are being tested by scientists all over the world, trying to be the first in the race for a Greener World.
