Made in China: The Green FUTURISM of Architect Ma Yansong

Made in China: The Green FUTURISM of Architect Ma Yansong | All about Architecture | Scoop.it

Chinese architect Ma Yansong has taken the West by storm with his organic, futuristic creations. With proposals to cover Tianenmen Square in thick forest and build a floating city over Ground Zero, no one can accuse him of playing it safe.

Over the last decade, avant-garde European architects have helped reshape Beijing's skyline. Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren's surreal CCTV tower and the futuristic, glowing Olympic Stadium conceived by the Swiss studio Herzog and de Meuron are just two of these new iconic Western imports. But now, a Chinese architect is reversing the trend. Rising star Ma Yansong has won a string of European architectural contests that will bring his experimental designs, which meld cutting-edge technology with an animist's awe of nature, to capitals on the Continent.

In a contest staged by the city of Paris to design a housing complex on the right bank of the River Seine, Ma and his firm, MAD architects, faced off against 95 architects from around the world to seize one of the coveted positions. In Rome, he took first place in a competition to redesign a residence near the gardens and galleries of the Villa Borghese. With both projects set to be launched in 2014, Ma was then invited to outline a master plan for a massive 200,000-square-meter commercial and retail project in Amsterdam's Zuidas business district.

Geometric Inspiration + Green Building: Taiwan's Zero-Carbon Swallows Nest

Geometric Inspiration + Green Building: Taiwan's Zero-Carbon Swallows Nest | All about Architecture | Scoop.it

Taking inspiration from a geometric möbius strip, architect Vincent Callebaut has designed an impressive new building for Taiwan's Taichung gateway park.

The Swallows Nest's form starts out with a triangle that is then rotated around an elipse. Reaching a height of eight-stories, the building will house shops, cafes, and an "endless patio" which opens up into the park and is found in the center of the structure. It will host a variety of art within the many interior galleries.

The Swallows Nest also features various eco-friendly features. The undulating roof will have a number of solar panels attached to it, while the building's glass construction allows for natural light to enter. Three vertical gardens are found in the park's center, with one at each arched entrance. Most impressively, there will be continued efforts to make the Swallows Nest a zero carbon emissions structure.

Love the exterior. I wonder how the interior would look like considering the thematic principles, creativity and artistic beauty of the design ... curious!!!

China's Sustainable Cave Hotel Under Construction

China's Sustainable Cave Hotel Under Construction | All about Architecture | Scoop.it

Construction has started on a cave hotel resort by Atkins that will nestle into the rockface of an abandoned water-filled quarry near Shanghai, China.

Once complete, the hotel will offer around 400 rooms, as well as conference facilities, a banquet hall, restaurants, a swimming pool and a water-sports centre.

The building will use geothermal technologies to generate its own electricity and lighting, while greenery will blanket a roof that extends just two storeys above the edge of the quarry.

Sustainability is integral to Atkins' design of this unique resort, built into an abandoned, water-filled quarry.

Resort and Hotel Mythbusters's comment, September 10, 2013 2:08 AM
This sustainable hotel is one another impressive work that architecture has been done. The basic idea itself is impressive considering its built in a cave over a waterfall and 3 storeys of them were beneath the water. However, the most important thing is this hotel generates their own energy which is incredible considering most new hotel nowadays have to promote their sustainability in the future. We can't wait to see the hotel to be finish and ready to use.
